February 24, 2003 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
LA Galaxy News Release
PASADENA, CA (Monday, February 24, 2003) -The Los Angeles Galaxy Major League Soccer (MLS) club and Kohl's Department Stores (NYSE: KSS), one of the nation's fastest-growing retailers, today announced an exclusive partnership that will bring Southern California soccer fans even closer to the 2002 MLS Cup Champions.
As the "Official Department Store of the Los Angeles Galaxy," Kohl's will extend the excitement of Major League Soccer into the communities where its shoppers live and work. Kohl's and the Galaxy will team up to create a variety of fan-based promotions and community events that will engage youth soccer families throughout the season.
Wisconsin-based Kohl's will open 28 stores in Southern California on March 7. The retailer plans to open eight stores in Orange County, seven stores in Los Angeles County, three stores in Ventura County and five stores each in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
"We welcome Kohl's to Southern California and to the Los Angeles Galaxy family," said Doug Hamilton, Galaxy vice president and general manager. "This partnership is a natural fit as Kohl's has long been a supporter of our sport. We look forward to helping Kohl's reach the youth soccer community and anticipate tremendous results."
The partnership enhances Kohl's already strong commitment to youth soccer in the United States. Kohl's has been the "Official Department Store of U.S. Youth Soccer," the country's largest grassroots youth sports organization, since February of 2002, and has been involved in local market youth soccer activities for several years.
"As a family-focused department store and a supporter of local market youth soccer, we're excited to extend our involvement in the sport to Southern California, and specifically, to Galaxy fans," said Julie Gardner, senior vice president of marketing for Kohl's.
Kohl's will be a major sponsor of the Galaxy's youth soccer camps and an official sponsor of several California Youth Soccer Association South events, including the State Cup and Tide American Cup, two popular tournaments held in the spring and summer, respectively.
Kohl's also will become title sponsor of the Galaxy Shuttle, a 12x20-foot team promotional vehicle, which will bring interactive soccer drills and games to fans at events throughout Southern California. The Galaxy Shuttle will make appearances during the season at community events and festivals, local soccer tournaments and pre-game festivities.
Details of other promotions and community programs will be announced as appropriate throughout the partnership.
Based in Menomonee Falls, Wis., Kohl's is a family-focused, value oriented specialty department store offering moderately priced national brand apparel, shoes, accessories and home products. Currently, the company operates 457 stores in 33 states. For a list of store locations, or for additional information, visit Kohl's Web site at www.kohls.com .
