New York Red Bulls News Release

SECAUCUS, NJ (Monday, February 24, 2003) - The MetroStars announced today that forward/midfielder Clint Mathis will undergo a procedure tomorrow to repair a right inguinal hernia injury. The United States World Cup star is expected to be sidelined for four weeks following the procedure and future rehabilitation.

Specialist Richard Cattey, who is based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, confirmed the injury this afternoon during an examination. He will perform the procedure tomorrow morning in Milwaukee. The Conyers, Georgia native is expected to rejoin the team for the latter parts of preseason training in Florida, after two weeks of rest. When he joins the team, he will undergo an aerobic program as part of the rehabilitation of the injury.

The MetroStars sent Mathis to see the specialist after the player complained of discomfort during preseason training last week in Bradenton, Florida.

The two-time MLS All-Star has appeared in 45 games (44 starts) for the MetroStars registering 24 goals and 20 assists for 68 points. He is the second-leading scorer in MetroStars history.
