Forwards Slavisa Ubiparipovic and Joey Tavernese scored just 27 seconds apart in the final minute of play as the visiting Eastern Division leaders Utica City FC came from behind to beat the Mississauga MetroStars 5-4 in a thrilling MASL match at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre Friday night.
? ?The MetroStars started brightly as Josip Keran broke the deadlock just over nine minutes into the first quarter and goalkeeper Sebastian Zeballos made three saves within just a few seconds to thwart the visitors and keep the home side ahead after the first 15 minutes of play.
? ?Utica City FC tied the match just 1:15 into the second quarter when Liam Callahan stole the ball from Marco Rodriguez and deposited it into the net left vacant by Zeballos. But MetroStars newcomer Jonathan Osorio scored his first MASL goal on a pass from Dwayne De Rosario with Mississauga on the power play. UCFC would equalize again just before halftime when Lucio Gonzaga fired a low strike from just inside the yellow line and the teams headed to the break tied 2-2.
? ?Just 45 seconds into the third quarter UCFC took the lead when Callahan set up Vittorio Petera to score from close range and the visitors led 3-2 after 3 quarters. But Josh Paredes would tie the game once again for Mississauga early in the fourth quarter as he struck a left foot shot from the top of the arc.
? ?Then with just 47 seconds left in the match, new signing Halberto Harris drove a right foot shot to the top corner of the net and the MetroStars looked to have sealed the win but that was only a precursor to the late game fireworks that gave Utica City FC the victory.
? ?The MetroStars will return to action Sunday, January 20 in Baltimore against Eastern Division rivals the Blast. Their next home game is Friday, February 15th when they host the Blast at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre with kickoff set for 7:35pm (ET).
