Phoenix Mercury News Release
Phoenix, AZ - The WNBA announced today the results of the 2004 WNBA Draft Lottery, determining the top three draft order for the April 2005 College Draft. The Mercury had 55 out of 1,000 chances to win the No. 1 pick for the second consecutive season but was unable to achieve the top honor. However, the Mercury were able to move up two spots from their projected fifth pick and claim the number three pick for the 2005 WNBA Draft.
The Charlotte Sting holding the fourth best chances (97 out of 1,000) were able to claim the first pick while the San Antonio Silver Stars, holding the best chances for the No. 1 pick (420 out of 1,000), dropped down to fourth. The Indiana Fever will select second followed by Phoenix at third, San Antonio Silver Stars at fourth and the Houston Comets at fifth. The WNBA Draft Lottery is comprised of all non-playoff teams from the previous season. Lottery chances are based solely on team records from the season prior.
"Anytime you improve your position from where you are slotted to be is really exciting for the organization," said team General Manager Seth Sulka. "Moving up in this years draft from the projected fifth spot to third is going to be very helpful, because the depth is not on the same level as last years draft your chances of getting an impact player are much greater."
The 2005 WNBA College Draft is expected to be held in April 2005, following the NCAA Tournament.
