Houston Comets News Release
HOUSTON â The Houston Comets finished outside the top three draws in the fourth annual WNBA Draft Lottery Wednesday evening, earning the fifth selection overall in the 2005 WNBA Draft. This marks the highest draft position for the Comets since 1997 when the team selected forward Tina Thompson with the number-one pick in the Inaugural WNBA Draft. Â Houston, with 261 chances out of 1,000, had the second-best odds to receive the first overall selection, which went to the Charlotte Sting. The Indiana Fever continued defying the odds by getting the second pick followed by the Phoenix Mercury with the third selection. By not winning one of the top three draws in the Draft Lottery, the San Antonio Silver Stars (9-25) and Houston (13-21) select by inverse order of their 2004 regular season records with the fourth and fifth picks in the first round. Â The Draft Lottery was conducted by WNBA officials and representatives from the accounting firm of Ernst & Young at the NBA Entertainment studios in Secaucus, N.J., and included the five teams that did not qualify for the 2004 WNBA Playoffs. The lottery established the order of selection for the first round of the draft, with the order of selection for the second and third rounds based on each team's finish during the 2004 regular season.
