WNBA 2005 Draft order set

December 1, 2004 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) News Release

Mystics Have Sixth Overall Pick

Washington, D.C. - The Washington Mystics will have the sixth overall pick in the 2005 WNBA Draft as determined by the draft lottery held today. The Charlotte Sting came up with the number one overall selection, followed by the Indiana Fever. The 2005 WNBA Draft will be held in April.

"We made great strides last season," said Mystics Senior Vice President of Business and Basketball Operations Judy Holland Burton. "We look forward to adding a player that will help us continue to reach our goals."

The Washington Mystics finished the 2004 regular season with a 17-17 record and made the playoff appearance for the third time in franchise history. Last season, the Mystics drafted guard Alana Beard from Duke University with the second overall pick. It was the second highest draft selection for the Mystics. In 1999, Washington held the number one pick in the draft and selected forward Chamique Holdsclaw from the University of Tennessee.

The WNBA Lottery included the five teams that did not qualify for the 2004 WNBA Playoffs. The lottery will establish the order of selection for the first-round of the draft, with the order of selection for the second and third rounds based on each team's regular season finish during the 2004 season.

The first-round order of selection for the teams that did not win one of the top three picks was determined by inverse order of their respective regular-season records.
