San Antonio Stars News Release

SAN ANTONIO – The WNBA announced today that the San Antonio Silver Stars have earned the rights to the fourth overall draft pick in the 2005 WNBA Draft.  The announcement was made earlier today during the WNBA Draft lottery held at the NBA Entertainment studios in Secaucus, N.J.  The 2005 WNBA Draft will be held in April.   The Charlotte Sting earned the first pick in the 2005 WNBA Draft followed by the Indiana Fever and the Phoenix Mercury with the Houston Comets rounding out the top five picks.   "While we would have loved to get the top overall pick in the upcoming draft, we are happy where we ended up," Silver Stars Chief Operating Officer Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil said.  "This year's senior class may not have a frontrunner like Diana Taurasi last year, but there are some outstanding players out there that have tremendous talent and will make our team better instantly.  We have already begun scouting players all over the country to determine what players best fit our needs."   The top prospects for the upcoming 2005 WNBA Draft are comprised of Notre Dame's Jacqueline Batteast, Shyra Elly of Tennessee,  Texas Christian University's Sandora Irvin, Janel McCarville of Minnesota, Rutgers' Cappie Pondexter, Kendra Wecker of Kansas State, Mississippi State's Tan White and a whole list of others.   The Silver Stars had the best overall chance (42.0 percent) of landing the first pick in this year's draft based on last season's 9-25 record.  Houston, who finished the season with a 13-21 record, had the second best chance (26.1 percent) of earning the top pick followed by the Fever (16.7 percent) who ended the season with a 15-19 record. Charlotte (9.7 percent) and the Mercury (5.5 percent) had the fourth and fifth best chances on landing the number one pick respectively.   The Draft Lottery was conducted by WNBA officials and representatives from the accounting firm of Ernst & Young and included the five teams that did not qualify for the 2004 WNBA Playoffs. The lottery is modeled after the lottery used in the NBA and is weighted to favor the teams with the poorer records. The lottery establishes the order of selection for the first round of the draft, with the order of selection for the second and third rounds based on teams' regular-season records in 2004.   Season ticket holders can still renew their tickets for the 2005 season by calling 444-5050.  Fans wishing to purchase new 2005 lower level season ticket packages can also call 444-5050 more information.  Full-season ticket prices are $150.30, $294.30, $384.30 and $600.30, while the 10-Game Pak prices are $93.50, $173.50 and $243.50.
