WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - For the second straight game, Yermin Mercedes provided the walk-off hit, as Winston-Salem defeated Wilmington 4-3 in Sunday's twin bill finale at BB&T Ballpark.
After Mercedes hit a walk-off homer in extra innings in the twin bill opener on Sunday, the Dash (34-19, 75-48) earned their eighth walk-off win in game two. Luis Gonzalez began the frame with a single against Justin Camp (2-2), and Luis Robert followed with a hit by pitch to put runners on first and second. After Blake Rutherford bounced into a fielder's choice, Bryan Brickhouse entered the game. On a 3-2 pitch, Mercedes poked the game-winning hit through the left side to propel the Dash to their ninth straight home win.
The Blue Rocks (29-26, 60-65) took their first advantage of the third against Dash starter Luis Martinez. Jackson Lueck began the frame with a double, and, after Rudy Martin reached on a strikeout and a wild pitch, D.J. Burt drove home a run on an RBI groundout.
But, the Dash responded in the bottom of the frame. Three batters after Zach Remillard singled to start the inning, Gonzalez roped an RBI double down the right-field line to knot the contest at one.
The two teams each plated a run the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Oliver Nunez legged out an inside-the-park homer after Gonzalez and Robert collided in right-center. However, in the bottom of the fourth, Remillard plated Mercedes on an RBI double to left-center to make it a 2-2 contest.
The ballclubs would trade runs again in the sixth inning. Oliver Nunez produced a run with an RBI groundout, but Remillard tied the ballgame with his 11th home run of the year, a solo shot to left-center. Connor Walsh (2-2) earned the win with two innings out of the bullpen.
Following an off day on Monday, the Dash begin a four-day, three-game series against Myrtle Beach. Tuesday will be a doubleheader at BB&T Ballpark, with game one set for 5 p.m. Promotions for this stretch include a Free Food Tuesday, a Pups in the Park Wednesday (presented by North Davidson Animal Hospital and Camel City Goods) and a Lowes Foods Thirsty Thursday.
