Greensboro Grasshoppers News Release
GREENSBORO - Through the first three innings of Friday's game Greensboro held a 5-1 advantage, but the tide changed through the final six frames as Lexington erased the early deficit and grabbed the game-two win, 8-6.
Getting hits didn't seem to be an issue for the Hoppers who out-hit Lexington 14-12 in the contest. Lexington lent a helping hand with three errors in the field, but the home team stranded 13 runners on base in the contest and failed to score in the final four innings, a stretch in which Lexington put up five runs to nab the lead and the game.
Hunter Mense continued his hitting tirade with a two-hit performance to extend his current hit streak to 12 games. During his hitting streak, Mense is hitting for a .460 average (23-for-50) and has raised his season mark from .274 on Aug. 13 to a team-leading .296. Both of Mense's hit were singles which brought an end to his three-game home run streak.
Just one night after slugging two home runs on his own birthday, 19-year-old Matt Dominguez tied a career high by recording his 11th three-hit game of the season to pace the Hoppers offensively.
Along with Dominguez, Ryan Anetsberger collected three hits for the Hoppers and is now hitting .500 (5-for-10) since returning from a two-month stint on the disabled list.
Tom Hickman, Tyler Belcher and Jameson Smith each added two hits to Greensboro's total.
Greensboro flirted with a possible rally in the ninth inning and twice had runners on second and third, but the first attempt saw pinch-running Justin Jacobs get tagged out at home before, what looked like a sqeaker through the infield, turned into a Ryan Curry line-out to Lexington's Catlin Everett to end the game.
The final series of the Hoppers' 2008 season continues Saturday as Greensboro and Lexington meet in game three of a five-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from NewBridge Bank Park.
