Hickory Crawdads News Release

The Augusta GreenJackets concluded their total domination of the Hickory Crawdads in Augusta during the 2008 season by defeating Hickory 8-1 Friday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The win by Augusta completed a sweep of the three game series, a series in which Augusta outscored Hickory 22-4, as well as a 7-0 season sweep of the games played at Augusta this season. In 2008, Augusta also won 12 of the 15 games played between the two teams.

Augusta put the game out of reach with a run in the first inning and seven more runs in the second of Crawdads starter Charles Benoit (0-3). The GreenJackets scored in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. Benoit walked a pair of runners before Dom Duggan scored on a ground ball out by Thomas Neal. The floodgates opened in the second with the rally coming after two were out and the bases empty. Benoit loaded the bases by giving up a single to Elio Sarmiento and walking James Simmons and Duggan. Garrett Baker then cleared the bases with a double. Benoit's struggles continued as be walked Juan Ciriaco, then surrended a three run homer to Neal, followed by a solo shot by Angel Villalona to complete the seven run onslaught. The Hickory offense was once again stymied by Augusta's pitching as Scott Barnes (3-2) kept the Crawdads hitless until a Matt Hague single in the fourth inning. The Crawdads finally had an opportunity to get back in the game in the sixth inning as they loaded the bases with none out. However, Hickory could only manage a sacrifice fly by Hague, scoring Greg Picart. Hickory once again loaded the bases in the 7th, this time against reliever Mitchell Lively, but Lively struck out Keanon Simon to end the threat. Lost in the blowout was a good effort by the Crawdads bullpen as Wanell Macia pitched arguably his best baseball of the season, allowing only two hits in 4.2 innings pitched. Adam Simon closed out the game for Hickory with two scoreless innings. The Crawdads return for their final three games of the season Saturday against the Greenville Drive. The Zooperstars will perform during the game with 7-department coolers being given out to the first 1000 fans in attendance, courtesy of Galaxy and Dial. The game will be broadcast on a tape-delay basis on 92.1 FM - WMNC following the North Carolina Tar Heels football game. Due to the tape delay, the broadcast will not be available on the internet.
