Rome Emperors News Release
Rome, GA - The Charleston Riverdogs made it two in row over the Rome Braves 15-7 before 2,763 fans at State Mutual Stadium. Charleston banged out 20 hits en route to the victory.
The Riverdogs scored early and often. Charleston put two runs on the board in the first inning thanks to a two RBI single by Justin Snyder. In the second Bradley Suttle singled home two runs and Brandon Laird added a base hit to score Jesus Montero for the 5-0 lead. Two more runs crossed the plate on Austin Romine's base hit in the third increasing the lead to 7-0. All seven runs scored in the first three innings came after two outs. Charleston added a single run in the fourth increasing their lead to 8-0.
Rome began to make a game of it in the bottom of the fourth scoring three runs. Luis Sumoza reached on a throwing error by Carmen Angelini ending up at second base and later moving to third on a ground out. Cody Johnson then walked and Jon Gilmore singled to score Sumoza moving Johnson to second. Chris Shehan doubled to score both Johnson and Gilmore for the 8-3 score. Rome plated two more runs in the fifth. With runners on first and second, Adam Coe sent a base hit to left to score the fourth run of the night for the Braves. The ball skipped past Dave Williams allowing a second run to score making the score 8-5. That's as close as Rome would get as Charleston went on to get the win 15-7. Jairo Heredia (6-7) gets the win for Charleston and Erik Cordier (1-2) the loss for Rome.
Roster Move: Pitcher Erik Cordier has been sent to Danville. Right handed pitcher Rodrigo Lopez joins the Rome club and is scheduled to pitch on Sunday. Lopez started 14 games last season for the Rockies and was 5-4 with a 4.42 ERA. His 2007 season was cut short due to Tommy John surgery. The Atlanta Braves signed him to a Minor League contract in 2008. Rome and Columbus meet tomorrow for the final series of the season beginning at 7pm. A fireworks extravaganza will follow the game.
