Shorebirds pull out close win

Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Despite only managing three hits, the Shorebirds used a two-run homer from Joe Nowicki to knock off the Captains 2-1 and sweep Lake County in the three game, two day series at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Nowicki's first homer since August 6th was his team-leading 19th of the year. After Ryan Adams' one-out single in the third, Nowicki's jack to right field with two away gave the Shorebirds a 2-1 lead.
Delmarva starter Zach Britton tossed six superb innings, only allowing one run on four hits while striking out seven. The southpaw picked up his 12th victory of the season, matching Sean Gleason for the team lead. Taking over in the seventh, Hank Williamson struck out five over the final three innings, in which the Captains were blanked as Williamson earned his first save as a Shorebird.
Lake County starter fanned nine Birds over five innings, but the two-run dinger off Nowicki's bat was enough to tag Montero with his seventh loss of the season. While the Shorebirds struck out 16 times in eight innings, the Captains never arose offensively to recapture the lead as the Birds won their 23rd one-run game of the year.
With Lakewood's loss, Delmarva is only half a game back in the overall season standings in the Northern Division. While there will be no trip to the postseason, the Shorebirds can still finish with the best full season record if they take two out of three over Lakewood.
