March 23, 2006 (Moncton, New Brunswick)- If anyone had the idea that the 2006 Mastercard Memorial Cup was merely a series of eight or nine hockey games to determine just who is the best junior hockey team in Canada, Bill Schurman says you are truly mistaken.

The gregarious general manager of the Moncton Wildcats and chair of the 2006 event to be held in the hub city from May 18-28 says he wants people to leave Moncton knowing that they been involved in much more than a series of hockey games.

Four teams, including the host Wildcats, will battle it out for junior hockey supremacy. The other three teams, yet to be determined, will represent the Ontario Hockey League, the Western Hockey League and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The first game is scheduled for Friday, May 19 with the host Wildcats going up against the OHL champion. The game is set to start at 8 p.m., but there will be plenty of reasons to be in your seats an hour early as the host committee has plans to wow you during the pre-game event.

"I don't want to give people the impression that hockey won't be the highlight of the 2006 Mastercard Memorial Cup,." said Schurman. "But, we have so much more to offer."

Included in the ever-expanding schedule of events are two prestigious golf tournaments, one the "Proud Past, Bright Future" alumni golf tournament which will be staged Saturday, May 20 at the Moncton Golf and Country Club and the other, the CHL Golf tournament to be held at both Royal Oaks and Fox Creek on Saturday, May 27.

Also tied in with the week-and-a-half long festival are two major banquets. The opening banquet is scheduled to be held Thursday, May 18 at the Coliseum Agrena while the CHL Awards dinner will be staged Saturday, May 27, also at the Agrena.

And even on game day, fans of all ages will want to take in the family fest and the fan fest which get underway three hours prior to game time each day and will still be open hours after the game has wrapped up on the ice. Both the fan fest and the family fest will be housed in the Agrena and will offer giant TV screens, Memorial Cup merchandise and numerous other surprises that the host committee is waiting to finalize.

Other events that have already been tied into the Memorial Cup schedule include a Wildcats 10th anniversary breakfast, a downtown Moncton street hockey championship, numerous New Brunswick Senior Baseball Leagues games featuring the Moncton Mets and a full-blown downtown pep rally.
