CLEARWATER, Fla. - Adonis Medina struck out nine in six innings, and Luke Williams knocked three hits as the Clearwater Threshers earned the win in the series opener, 7-3 over the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Monday night.

Lakeland (8-2) (44-36) grabbed a run off Medina in the first inning, after Isaac Paredes was hit by a pitch with two outs, and Dylan Burdeaux followed with a double to right-center to score Paredes to make it 1-0.

Clearwater (8-3) (40-39) came back to tie it in the bottom of the first.

Arquimedes Gamboa drew a leadoff walk, and Williams followed with a single through the left side. With one out, Jose Pujols walked, and Mickey Moniak lofted a sacrifice fly to left to score Gamboa and knot the game up at one.

Clearwater took the lead an inning later. Kyle Martin reached on a broken bat infield single, and Raul Rivas hit into a fielder's choice. Rivas stole second, and scored when Jose Gomez pushed a double up the first base line.

Gamboa followed with an infield single, and a wild pickoff move from Gregory Soto (4-3) scored Gomez to bump Clearwater's lead to 3-1.

Lakeland brought it even again, as Paredes and Burdeaux lifted back-to-back home runs in the top of the fourth.

The tie did not last long, as a one-out error allowed Rivas to reach, and a walk to Gamboa set up pair aboard for Williams. Williams came through with a liner to right to score Rivas and put Clearwater back on top, 4-3.

Clearwater tacked on an inning later, when Moniak ripped a triple to the warning track in center, and Edgar Cabral split the gap in left-center to score Moniak and make it 5-3.

The Threshers added two more in the sixth off reliever Jeff Thompson. Williams led off with a single to right, and stole second. Henri Lartigue brought him home with a single through the right side, putting Clearwater up 6-3. After reliever Wladimir Pinto took over, an error and a pair of wild pitches brought home Lartigue to make it 7-3.

Felix Paulino tossed two scoreless innings in relief, and Jakob Hernandez finished it off, aided by a diving catch in right by Pujols that ended the ballgame.

The finale of the two-game set will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesay, with Alejandro Requena on the hill against Spenser Watkins. The game will broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com starting at 6:45 p.m.
