Florida Fire Frogs News Release

JUPITER, Fla. - In a night that featured 29 strikeouts, the Florida Fire Frogs came out victorious in a 3-1 final over the Jupiter Hammerheads at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium on Monday night, snapping a seven-game losing streak.

Ian Anderson (2-5) and Jordan Yamamoto (4-1) exchanged blows throughout the series opener, with the Fire Frogs' starter out dueling the Hammerheads' right-hander with six shutout innings. The Atlanta Braves' fifth-ranked prospect fired in his fifth quality start of the season, and fourth in his last five starts on Monday night, scattering three hits while walking one and tying a career- and team-record with 11 strikeouts. The native of Rexford, N.Y. set down six consecutive batters on strikes from the final two outs of the third until the start of the fifth, and recorded strikeouts to nine of the final twelve batters faced.

Since the start of June, the 20-year-old has posted a 2-3 record, but has an ERA of just 2.21 over 11 games by allowing 14 earned runs in 57 innings of work.

Florida (2-8, 31-45) cracked through the scoreboard in the fourth to plate their first runs against Yamamoto in 10 innings against the Miami Marlins' prospect. Jared James (1x3, R, BB) broke up a no-hit bid with a one-out single to right. After Garrison Schwartz (0x2, R) was hit by a pitch, a wild pitch advanced both runners into scoring position for Kurt Hoekstra (1x4, 2 RBI), who deposited a two-run single to center for the 2-0 lead.

The visitors took advantage of a defensive miscue in the fifth to add onto the lead. Jordan Rodgers (0x3, R) reached on a dropped third strike to start out the frame, and swiped second during Alan Crowley's (0x3) at-bat. After Crowley struck out, Cristian Pache (0x4) flew out to left field.

Cameron Baranek's throw back to the infield got away from Martin Prado at third, allowing Rodgers to score on the play to stretch the advantage to three.

Thomas Burrows worked a scoreless seventh and eighth innings to bridge the game to Mauricio Cabrera (SV, 1), who allowed two runs on three hits in the ninth en route to his first save of the season.

The combination of Anderson (11), Burrows (2) and Cabrera (1) set a season-high with 14 strikeouts on the night, besting the previous mark of 12, which had been accomplished three previous times in 2018.

Yamamoto set down 12 in his start for Jupiter (5-6, 46-34), and has retired 25 hitters on strikes in two starts against Florida this season. Travis Neubeck (1) and Esmerling de la Rosa (2) recorded the final three strikeouts of the night for the home team.

The Fire Frogs will go for the sweep in the finale of the two-game set on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. LHP Joey Wentz (1-2, 2.85) takes the mound against RHP Josh Roeder (3-1, 3.25). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
