Mechanics drown RiverDogs

Richmond, VA – The Motor City Mechanics tallied three powerplay goals en route to a 5-4 road victory over the Richmond RiverDogs tonight. This is the Mechanics first victory over an Eastern Conference team.

Richmond opened the scoring just over one minute into the first period on a goal by Jonathon Gagnon. Down 1-0, Motor City tied the game on a powerplay strike from Joe Burton, his team leading 16th goal of the season, early in the second period. Gagnon notched his second of the evening to give the RiverDogs a 2-1 lead at the 11:17 mark of the second. Rookie David Bonk found the back of the net two minutes later to tie the game. The Mechanics took advantage of the powerplay, collecting man advantage goals from Blair Manning and Matt Hunter to take a 4-2 lead at the end of 40 minutes.

Burton found the back of the net for the second time tonight 1:55 into the third period, giving Motor City a 5-2 lead. With Mechanics defensemen Jeremy Law and Tim Laurila serving penalties, Francis Belanger used the two-man advantage to bring Richmond within two at 9:01. David Brosseau cut Motor City's lead to 5-4 but the RiverDogs were unable to catch up.

Manning notched a goal and two assists on the night, Burton tallied two goals and an assist and Kyle Kos added two goals for the Mechanics.

The Mechanics continue their road trip through the weekend when they head to Adirondack for games Saturday and Sunday against the Frostbite. On Monday, Mechanics defenseman Kevin Hansen will make his first career All-Star appearance as part of team Pepsi in the UHL All-Star Classic.
