McKay, Hot Rods Post First Shutout, Beat Kernels 4-0

BOWLING GREEN, KY - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (21-12) got back in the win column on Thursday night, beating the Cedar Rapids Kernels (14-14) 4-0. It was Bowling Green's first shutout of the season, and RHP Phoenix Sanders earned his first career save.

In the first inning, the Hot Rods got on the board on the strength of three base hits, the last of which came from LF Moises Gomez, and it scored SS Taylor Walls. Bowling Green led 1-0.

LHP Brendan McKay had another terrific outing, six innings of one hit ball, striking out seven. The six innings was a career best for him, and he only needed 54 pitches to get through his night.

In the fifth, Bowling Green scored another pair of runs. They sent eight batters to the plate and used an RBI single from 3B Zach Rutherford and an RBI double from Gomez to swell the lead to 3-0.

The sixth inning saw the Hot Rods score their final run of the night. C Zac Law came up with his only hit of the night, and it was a good one, as it brought 2B Vidal Brujan in, and it was 4-0 Bowling Green.

McKay earned the win, improving to 2-0. His ERA dropped to 1.09. Sanders earned his first career save, recording the final out of the night.

The Hot Rods and Kernels will do battle in game two of their three game series tomorrow night at 6:35pm. RHP Alex Valverde (2-1, 3.47) will start for Bowling Green, while Cedar Rapids will counter with RHP Blayne Enlow (0-1, 4.91).
