LumberKings top Cubs 8-7 in 11 innings

South Bend, IN - In the longest game of the season, by innings played, the Clinton LumberKings topped the South bend Cubs 8-7 in 11 innings on Thursday night at Four Winds Field.

The game settled into in a pitcher's duel through the first six innings. LumberKings (18-12) starter Ryne Inman shutout the Cubs (13-17) over his six innings and was matched by South Bend starter Javier Assad who turned in five shutout innings. Both pitchers received no decisions for their time out.

The scoreless tie was broken in the top of the seventh inning. With two out in the frame, Jack Larsen worked a walk and scored when Johnny Adams followed doubled into the left field corner.

The 1-0 lead did not hold up long for Clinton. Tyler Watson replaced Inman to work the bottom of the seventh and coughed up the one run lead. Michael Cruz led the inning off with a double, and three batters later, scored on a two out single by Rafael Narea.

The sore remained tied at one until the top of the 10th. Jack Larsen wasted no time in reclaiming the LumberKings lead off Cubs reliever Manuel Rodriguez. On the second pitch of the inning he lined his team leading sixth home run over the wall in right for a 3-1 LumberKings lead.

South Bend stormed back to tie the game in the bottom of the 10th off of Clinton reliever Collin Kober. Narea was assigned to second to start the inning, the new Minor League Baseball extra inning rule, and scored on an RBI single to left by Zach Davis. Davis promptly stole second and scored the game's tying run on an RBI single to left by Jared Young.

In the top of the 11th inning, Clinton retook the lead off Rodriguez (0-1). Free base runner, Dimas Ojeda was immediately moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Billy Cooke. Ryan Scott was then hit by a pitch to put runners sat first and third with one out. Joseph Rosa then bounced a ball to second for what looked to be an inning ending double play but Cubs second basemen Narea, who fielded the ball, missed the tag of Scott which allowed Ojeda to score from third. Cubs manager Jimmy Gonzalez was then tossed from the game arguing the call with field umpire Ben Rosen.

Kober (2-0) returned in the bottom of the 11th and shutdown the Cubs 1-2-3 to pick up his second win of the season.

The LumberKings return to Four Wind Field for the second game of their three-game set with the South Bend Cubs on Friday night. Clinton will throw left-hander Nick Wells (2-2, 5.28) while the Cubs will counter with lefty Brendon Little (1-2, 6.50). First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 PM (ET). Fans looking to listen to the call of the game can hear Erik Oas at 7:20 PM (ET) with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI.
