Great Lakes Loons News Release
GRAND CHUTE, Wisc. - A strong performance from Wisconsin right-handed starter Nelson Hernandez, coupled with four Loons' errors, spelled a 4-3 defeat for Great Lakes in Thursday's series opener against the Timber Rattlers at Neuroscience Group Field.
It is the seventh straight one-run game in which the Loons have played, and they are 3-4 on that stretch. The Loons are 0-10 in the first game of a series this season and have lost seven straight to the Timber Rattlers (Brewers).
The Loons scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning on Jared Walker's team-best 17th RBI, but managed only three hits off Hernandez, who notched his Midwest League-best fifth win of the season. Hernandez struck out eight without a walk.
After not committing an error in their first three games of the road trip, the Loons tied a season high with four gaffes on Thursday. Two miscues led directly to Wisconsin runs.
With the score tied at one in the bottom of the fourth, Wisconsin had runners at the corners with two outs. Zach Clark stole second base, and Loons' catcher Gersel Pitre faked a throw to second but instead threw to third to double off Payton Henry. Pitre's throw hit Henry and rolled into the grass foul third, which allowed Henry to score on the error and give Wisconsin its first lead of the game.
One inning later, right fielder Romer Cuadrado allowed a rolling single from Joantgel Segovia under his glove and nearly all the way to the warning track thus enabling Devin Hairston to score from first and make the score 3-1.
While the Loons rallied for two runs and four hits in the top of the eighth against reliever Robbie Hitt, the inning ended on a Starling Heredia strikeout with the bases loaded. In the ninth, the Loons placed runners on first and second with no one out, but back-to-back strikeouts by Rodrigo Benoit ended the game.
The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007. Dow Diamond serves as the team's home and also houses the Michigan Baseball Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, and ESPN 100.9-FM.
