McGovern Strikes out 10 in Rubber Match

KANSAS CITY, KS -- The Winnipeg Goldeyes (33-28) fell 3-1 to the Kansas City T-Bones (28-34) in a pitcher's duel on Sunday afternoon at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
Winnipeg starter Kevin McGovern (4-2, 4.40) put up double digit strikeouts for his second appearance in a row. He struck out 10 T-Bones and allowed three runs on three hits through 6 1/3 innings pitched for the loss. Brandon Shimo threw two outs to end the bottom seventh, and right-hander Robert Tasin pitched a scoreless eighth.
Mike Kickham (2-1, 2.30), a former Major Leaguer, gave up the Goldeyes' lone run on six hits through seven innings pitched for the win, and Mark Haynes picked up his thirteenth save of the season with a scoreless top ninth.
"Both pitchers did a really good job today," Goldeyes hitting coach Tom Vaeth said about McGovern and Kickham.
"(Kevin was good). It's a shame we couldn't give him more runs to work with, but you have to credit their pitcher. He didn't give us a lot to work with. He played in the Majors for a reason."
Jake Blackwood, a former Goldeye, opened the scoring for Kansas City with a solo home run in the bottom second.
Neither team scored again until the fifth, when Wes Darvill hit a leadoff triple and Maikol Gonzalez drove him home with a one-out RBI double to centre to tie the game at 1.
The Goldeyes sent runners to first and second on a pair of two-out singles from Jacob Rogers and Ridge Hoopii-Haslam in the seventh but stranded both runners. The T-Bones rallied in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on sacrifice flies from Vladimir Frias and Brian Erie to take a 3-1 lead they never relinquished.
The Goldeyes went down in order in the eighth and put runners on first and second in the ninth, but Haynes struck out the final two batters to face him, and the T-Bones took the game 3-1 and the series 2-1.
"We got the tying runs on and the go-ahead run at the plate, but it just wasn't our day," Vaeth said.
Kansas City catcher Steve Swingle left the game with an injury in the top second and did not return.
The Goldeyes will look to bounce back when they take on their North Division rivals, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Monday night at 7. Right-hander Edwin Carl (5-5, 5.19) is set to start for the Goldeyes against lefty Tyler Alexander (7-3, 3.04). The Fish will play three games at Newman Outdoor Field before returning to Winnipeg to face the Kansas City T-Bones in another three-game set.
