Sanford Mainers News Release

NEWPORT, Ri - Since starting the year on the wrong foot the Mainers are in a rhythm. On Wednesday night at Cardines Field, Sanford utilized the long ball to split the season series with Newport, 6-4.

Similar to the first time that these two squads met a week ago it was a pitcher's duel between Jacob Marshall (Le Moyne) for the Mainers and Jake Garland (Miami (FL)) for the Gulls.

Newport looked to strike first in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded and one out, but the Sanford defense had other plans, turning a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the jam.

The Moose were held hitless until the top half of the fifth. Grant Knipp (Campbell) reached base on a single. Then on the very next pitch, Aidan Kane (Delaware) launched one of the right-center field fence for his first home run of the season, 2-0.

Marshall would depart after the fifth inning for Ryan Butler (Liberty), closing his stat line with no runs allowed on three hits, while striking out six batters.

Garland would stay in the game until the eighth when the Mainers would jump on him again, a leadoff walk from Kane, followed by back-to-back singles from Jake Rainess (Maine) and Kevin Skagerlind (UMass) loaded the bases.

With one away Quinn McDaniel (Maine) came up and connected on a pitch sending over the wall in right-center for a grand slam, 6-0. It was McDaniel's second homer of the year, tying him with Matthew Polk (Vanderbilt) for the team-high.

The Gulls wouldn't go away quietly, Slate Alford (Mississippi State) scored on the RBI single from Cam Clayton (Washington).

After a walk, the soon-to-be Mississippi State Bulldog, Colton Ledbetter (Samford) smoked a no-doubt three-run home run to right-center to cut the lead down to two, 6-4.

However, the Mainers bullpen would shut the door in the ninth as Brady Afthim came out of the bullpen and recorded the save, his first of the summer.

With the win, Sanford improves to 5-9, while Newport's losing skid increases to four, and falls to 7-6 overall.

Next on the docket, the green and yellow return to Goodall Park to host the North Shore Navigators, with the first pitch set for 6:30 p.m, Sonny Fauci is the expected starter.
