Close games around the league created an exciting Tuesday in the NECBL.

Valley Blue Sox 4 - Mystic Schooners 3

W - Emmanuel Corporan 1-0 (Hartford): 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER (1 R), 1 BB, 1 K

L - Tommy Hughes 0-1 (Southern Connecticut St): 0.1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

S - Andrew Roman 1 (Salve Regina): 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

Dodd Memorial Stadium in Mystic, CT - The Valley Blue Sox (7-6) edged the Mystic Schooners (5-4) in a showdown decided in the late innings.

Blue Sox reliever Andrew Roman (Salve Regina) entered in the ninth holding a one run lead. After striking out the first batter, he hit a batter and gave up a double, leaving runners on second and third with only one out. Stuck in a spot where he couldn't panic, Roman delivered in style. The Valley pitcher struck out two straight batters to end Mystic's hopes of a comeback. A seventeen pitch ninth inning ended in a Tristan McAlister (Mt St Mary's) punch out and a victory for Valley.

The Schooners took the lead immediately in the first, scoring a run off an Addison Kopack (U of Rhode Island) RBI. Valley responded in the second, tying the game at one after a passed ball. The game would stay tied until the sixth after both starting pitchers found a groove. Blue Sox starter Emmanuel Corporan lasted six innings, giving up only three hits and one run. Mystic opener Matthew Nunan (Boston College) was also stellar, giving up one run and striking out five in five innings of work.

The deadlock was broken in the top of the sixth when Valley plated three runners. A Sam Franco (Purdue) solo homer and RBIs from Michael Casaleggio (Palm Beach Atlantic) and Blaze Fadio (Lafayette) put the Blue Sox up 4-1.

Mystic closed the gap in the seventh and the eighth, plating a run in each inning, before failing to get home two runners in scoring position in the ninth.

Valley returns home today at 6:35 p.m. to face Danbury (7-6) while Mystic hosts red-hot Vermont (12-1) at 6:30 p.m.

Bristol Blues 3 - Ocean State Waves 2

W - Michael Thomas Morrissey 1-0 (Bryant): 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 K

L - Brandyn Garcia 0-1 (Quinnipiac): 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

S - Thomas Benincaso 1 (Eastern Connecticut St): 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

Old Mountain Field in South Kingstown, RI - Through a late comeback, the Bristol Blues (11-2) took down the Ocean State Waves (5-9).

Heading into the seventh inning, Bristol was scoreless thanks to Ocean State starter Joe Cinnella (Seton Hall), who gave up only four hits in six innings. Once Cinnella was relieved, the Blues took advantage, scoring two in the seventh off an error and a Griffin Arnone (Elon) double. In the eighth, Bristol completed its comeback in great fashion. Pinch hitter Chaz Myers (Pacific) came up in his only at-bat of the game and smacked a homer to give the Blues a 3-2 lead.

Ocean State scored its only two runs of the game in the second inning. A Chase Meggers (Oregon) two-run shot put the Waves up 2-0 before they were shutdown the rest of the night. Bristol starter Jagger Duquette (Wagner) went six innings strong and gave up only three hits before Morrissey and Benincaso came in to close out the game, combining to give up only one hit.

Bristol looks for its twelfth win of the season when it travels to North Adams tonight at 6:30 p.m. Ocean State tries to get back on track when it heads to Keene tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.

Keene Swamp Bats 6 - Newport Gulls 0

W - Dylan Ross 1-0 (St. John's): 3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

L - Cole Stasio 0-1 (Baylor): 3.0 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K

Alumni Field in Keene, N.H. - The Keene Swamp Bats (7-5) cruised to a 6-0 victory over the Newport Gulls (7-5).

The Swamp Bats made sure to take advantage of their opportunities early. When men were on first and second base with one out, Colin Wetterau (St. John's) lined a ball into the left-center field gap for a double that drove Carter Mathison (Indiana) in. Two batters later, Lucas Costello (Wake Forest) drove Wetterau and Paxton Tomaini (Florida Southwestern) in on a base hit to left field.

The third inning provided similar results for Keene. Dan Covino (Central Connecticut State) and Jackson Ross (Florida Atlantic) led off with walks, then Mathison slammed a ball over the right fielder's head for an RBI double. Garrett Rice (Missouri Columbia) followed that up with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0 in Keene's favor early in the game.

Not too much pressure was put on the Swamp Bats' offense because of their effective pitching throughout the game. Michael Ross (Samford) started the game with four shutout innings, then Grant Besser (Florida Southwestern) followed that up with two shutout innings. Completing the shutout was Dylan Johnson, who threw three perfect innings with four strikeouts.

Keene's next game will be today at 6 p.m. on the road against a divisional opponent in the Upper Valley Nighthawks. The Gulls will be home at 6:35 p.m. today against the Sanford Mainers.

Sanford Mainers 6 - Upper Valley Nighthawks 4

W - Ryan Douglas 1-0 (North Carolina Asheville): 7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K

L - Randall Alejo 1-1 (St. Rose): 2.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 K

S - Brian Craven 2 (Davidson): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Goodall Park in Sanford, Maine - The Sanford Mainers (4-9) were in control in their 6-4 victory over the Upper Valley Nighthawks (5-7).

Sanford struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Quinn McDaniel (Maine Orono) scored on a wild pitch to give the team the lead. The Nighthawks responded in the top of the second when runners were on the corners and Kyle Novak (James Madison) drove William Sullivan (Troy) in on a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

However, Sanford's lineup remained poised. After Devan Bade (Binghamton) led off with a single, MJ Lucas (North Carolina Asheville) hit a ball in the right-center gap. As Bade advanced to third base, he garnered a throw, which got by the third baseman. Bade scored, and Lucas moved to third base. Two batters later, McDaniel drove Lucas in on a single to make it 3-1.

An RBI single in the third inning from Upper Valley's Tyler Sorrentino (Charleston) brought the Nighthawks within one run. For a couple innings, both offenses did not add to the run column. Then, in the bottom of the fifth inning, Sanford's McDaniel led the inning off with a single. The following batter, Matthew Polk (Vanderbilt), hit a single that moved McDaniel to third base, and Polk advanced to second base on the throw to third. After a lineout, Adam Dapkewicz (Georgetown) hit a 2-run single to give the Mainers a 3-run lead.

Sanford got more insurance on a David Bermudez (Manhattan) RBI single to make it 6-2. The Nighthawks provided a threat in the top of the eighth after a Jonathan Hogart (Louisiana Tech) 2-run double, but they did not extend the rally, and the Mainers ended up taking the 6-4 victory.

The Mainers will be in Newport today to face the Gulls at 6:35 p.m. Upper Valley's next matchup will be at home today against a fellow North Division team in the Keene Swamp Bats.

Montpelier Recreation Field, Montpelier, V.T. - The Vermont Mountaineers (12-1) maintain the top spot in the NECBL as they held on in a close game to defeat the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (5-7) Tuesday night at Montpelier Recreation Field.

The Mountaineers were the first to score as Ben Williamson (William & Mary) singled to lead off the bottom of the third inning and advanced to second on a fielder's choice, setting up Matthew Venuto (Fairfield) who doubled to center field to score the run and give Vermont a 1-0 lead. The Mountaineers would add to their advantage late in the game when Gerry Siracusa (UMass Lowell) doubled to lead off the bottom of the eighth and was driven in on the ensuing at-bat by a Stephen DiTomaso (George Washington) RBI single to center field.

The Muskrats made a push in the top of the ninth when Cole Palmeri (Colby College) doubled to center field to score Patrick Roche (Boston College) who had reached first base earlier in the inning on a fielder's choice. Leading by just one run with two outs in the inning, Metzger managed to strike out Sebastian Mueller (Quinnipiac) to earn the save and secure the victory for Vermont.

Siracusa played well offensively for the Mountaineers, going 2-for-4 on the night with a double and a run scored while Roche led the Muskrats, also going 2-for-4 and scoring a run of his own.

L - Cory Bosecker 0-2 (Butler) 4.1 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 7 K

Rogers Park in Danbury, Conn. - The Danbury Westerners (7-6) posted their first shutout of the season against West Division rivals, the North Adams Steeplecats (3-10), with a final score of 5-0.

Danbury got on the board in no time as right fielder Jett Lovett (Georgia Tech) doubled, advanced to third, then scored on a single by designated hitter Korey Morton (Connecticut). After Bosecker posted a perfect second inning, the Westerners gained back some momentum as Lovett got his second run of the night with Morton bringing him home again. Bosecker couldn't keep Danbury at bay as Morton struck big with a homer that brought himself, Lovett and center fielder Jermaine White (St Johns) home for the 5-0 score.

Both pitching squads would then hold each of the opposing offenses in the last three innings for no runs to close the game with a 5-0 score. Steeplecats pitcher Cohen Nies (Defiance) only allowed one hit while his counterpart Ashton Johnson (Northampton) spoiled any chance to get on base with no hits. Danbury's pitching core was astonishing as Billy Oldham (Eastern Connecticut) and Ethan Bradford (Nebraska Lincoln) didn't allow a single hit.
