Sanford Mainers News Release
SANFORD, Me. - The third time was the charm as Sanford finally broke through against Upper Valley, as the two squared off for the third consecutive Tuesday in a row. A quick start propelled the Mainers to the victory over the Nighthawks, 6-4.
It was a pitching rematch from Opening Day as Ryan Douglas (UNC-Asheville) took to the mound for Sanford, while Randall Alejo (College of St. Rose) started for Upper Valley.
For Alejo it was his third start of the year, all coming versus Sanford, likewise, Douglas was making his third start.
It was not a quiet start for the Mainers as they jumped out to an early lead as Quinn McDaniel (Maine) stole third and then scored on the overthrow from catcher Michael Goehrig, 1-0.
Upper Valley would tie it up off the sac-fly from Kyle Novak (James Madison) that scored Willaim Sullivan (Troy), 1-1.
Sanford would strike again in the bottom of the second, MJ Lucas (UNC-Asheville) roped a single into right field, and then off the throwing error, Devan Bade (Binghamton) would crawl, literally, home. Lucas would come home to score off the RBI single from McDaniel, 3-1.
An RBI single from Max Grant (Canisius) in the top of the third brought the Nighthawks within one, 3-2.
Adam Dapkewicz (Georgetown) would come up clutch in the fifth with an RBI single that scored both McDaniel and Matthew Polk (Vanderbilt), 5-2.
It would become 6-2 when Calvin Hewett (Vanderbilt) scored on the RBI single from David Bermudez (Manhattan).
The Nighthawks would score a pair in the eighth to get within two but it would be too little too late.
Brain Craven came onto the mound in the ninth and flashed the leather on a comebacker before flipping it to first for the final out. It was Craven's second save and the Mainers' third-straight win.
The win puts Sanford at 4-9 on the year, while Upper Valley drops to 5-7.
Tomorrow the Mainers are back on the road as they make the long journey to Newport to face the Gulls. Jacob Marshall is expected to start with the first set at around 6:35 p.m. from Cardines Field.
