Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - Defenseman Ian McCoshen will wear Hawks colors again, but this time for Chicago after being traded from the Florida Panthers to the Chicago Blackhawks late Thursday.
The former Waterloo Black Hawk has been assigned to the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League. In exchange for McCoshen, Chicago sent forward Aleksi Saarela to Florida. McCoshen had been with the Panthers organization since he was signed out of Boston College in 2016.
In 2010/11 at just age 15, McCoshen became a Waterloo Black Hawk. During three campaigns in the Cedar Valley, he played in 150 regular season games, notching 19 goals and 51 assists. He was also +30. During his final year of junior hockey in 2012/13, McCoshen starred with 11 goals and 33 assists in 53 appearances and a +35 mark. His totals for goals, assists, points, and plus/minus all ranked among the top five for USHL defensemen. He also led the league in power play points by a defenseman (25).
During the Hudson, Wisconsin-native's three seasons with the Hawks, Waterloo reached the Clark Cup championship series in 2012, matched a then-team record for wins in a single season (39) in 2012/13, and claimed a silver medal during the 2012 Junior Club World Cup in Omsk, Russia. McCoshen was on the ice for 11 career Clark Cup playoff games, notching six goals and five assists. After his final year with Waterloo, Florida selected McCoshen with the first pick of the second round during the 2013 NHL Draft.
At Boston College for three seasons, McCoshen helped the Eagles reach the NCAA Tournament three times and the Frozen Four twice. Simultaneously, he also represented the United States at the IIHF World Junior Championships in both 2014 and 2015.
McCoshen made his NHL debut with the Panthers on April 6, 2017. He has skated in 60 NHL regular season games with four goals and three assists. McCoshen opened this season with the Panthers' AHL affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds.
Two former Waterloo players have gone on to appear for the Chicago Blackhawks: McCoshen's Waterloo teammate Vinnie Hinostroza was a Chicago forward from 2015/16 through 2017/18. Defenseman Blake Hillman appeared for Chicago near the end of 2017/18.
