LANCASTER, Pa. - Lancaster native Matt Watson will play his first game at Clipper Magazine Stadium tonight at 7. The former major league outfielder signed with the Barnstormers on July 7. He had six RBIs in nine games during the team's recently completed 11-game road trip.
Watson, 30, reached the big leagues with the New York Mets in 2003 and the Oakland A's in 2005. He spent time in Korea and in the minors with the Mets this season before deciding to play in his hometown.
"I don't think my career is over," Watson said after he signed with the Barnstormers. "I'd like to make it back to the big leagues. But I'm a realist. I think the odds may be slim to get back there. I think I could get back to Asia and do well. But I want to see if it's still enjoyable playing, to see if it's something I choose to do for a career or whether it's time to turn the page."
Tonight marks the start of a seven-game homestand for the Barnstormers. It begins with a three-game War of the Roses series against the York Revolution and concludes with a four-game set against the Long Island Ducks.
Tonight, the team is hosting AG Night presented by the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce. It includes a cowbell giveaway and post-game fireworks. Saturday is Pennsylvania Lottery Night. Fans ages 18 and over will receive a $1 voucher for a lottery ticket and there will be fireworks after the game. On Sunday, there will be a cowbank giveaway for kids 14 and under sponsored by Turkey Hill Dairy. Fans are invited to play catch on the field prior to the game and kids may run the bases after the game.
Tickets for all games are available by logging onto www.lancasterbarnstormers.com, by calling 717-509-HITS or by visiting the stadium box office during regular business hours.
