Macon Mayhem News Release

The Macon Mayhem have added their first defenseman to the training camp roster, signing Rene Hunter to a tryout for the 2019-20 season. Hunter has become the first player this summer to sign who has not played for the Mayhem before.

Hunter (25) hails from Ebb and Flow First Nation, Manitoba--a small, wintery settlement located about two hours northwest of Winnipeg. It is an indigenous reserve with a population of approximately 2,000 people. He is of Ojibwe ancestry, which is the second largest First Nations populace in Canada after the Cree. Hunter is just the second aboriginal player to ever sign a tryout with the Mayhem. The first was Adam Cheezo, who did not report to training camp last summer. With this signing, Hunter has become the first player in the history of his hometown to ever sign a tryout with a professional hockey team.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to play professional hockey," Hunter said. "I'm really looking forward to going down to Macon and getting the experience of playing again. Not many people have this opportunity, which is why I decided to go for it. I don't know much about the city of Macon, but that's part of the excitement. I'm excited to have a different scene in my life."

The 6'0, 230 pound blue-liner grew up playing hockey on the frozen landscapes of rural Manitoba. When he was 16, he trekked a couple of hours south to begin his junior career with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League. He played there for four seasons, dressing for a total of 266 games and registering 70 points (10 G, 60 A) over the course of his career. Since then, he has played three seasons at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, where he has worked towards his degree in Kinesiology.

"Hunter is a two-way defenseman with good size and work ethic, and has been a quality teammate for every team he has been on," Mayhem Head Coach Leo Thomas said. "He played at a high level in juniors and college and is excited to prove what he can do."

Hunter marks the fifth player signing of the off-season and the first defenseman added to the roster. The signings will continue throughout the summer as training camp draws nearer. Opening night is scheduled for October 18th against the Fayetteville Marksmen. Mayhem season tickets and partial plans are available for the 2019-20 season.
