Mayhem Shut out for First Time of the Season
November 23, 2018 - SPHL (SPHL)
Macon Mayhem News Release
Visiting Birmingham for the only time all season, the Mayhem fell by a 2-0 final to the undefeated Bulls.
After generating the first two shots on goal, the Mayhem took a nosedive in that department and conceded 11 straight shots in the first period. On a Birmingham power play, Taylor Dickin redirected a Justin Larson slap shot from above the left circle past Jordan Ruby to open the scoring for the Bulls.
Just 5:15 later, the opposite situation took place and Dickin set up Larson for a point shot upon entering the Macon zone. The SPHL Player of the Week from Week 4 doubled the Birmingham advantage.
Early in the second period, Jake Trask intercepted a Birmingham clearing attempt. He wound up and fired a heavy slap shot, which was partially halted by Bulls goaltender Mavric Parks. The puck squeaked through his equipment, but just barely slowed down enough to not cross the goal line. With a stroke of luck, the Bulls maintained their insurance lead and held it for the remainder of the middle stanza.
The Mayhem made a late push in the final period in an attempt to break the shutout, but they could not solve Parks for the duration of the game. They outshot the Bulls 10-6 in period three, but Parks held his ground and handed the Mayhem their first shutout of the 2018-19 season.
Ruby denied 23 of 25 shots for his second regulation loss of the season, while Parks countered with all 21 saves to earn his eighth win and first shutout of the season. The Mayhem will host the Bulls at the tail end of their home-and-home tomorrow night at the Macon Centreplex on Cancer Awareness Night. Puck drops at 7:35 pm ET. Tickets can be purchased.
