
MAYHEM GAME RECAP: Mayhem Hold off Late Surge to Defeat Knoxville 4-3

KNOXVILLE, TN- After securing an early three-goal lead tonight against the Knoxville Ice Bears, the Macon Mayhem needed a third-period goal from Chris Joseph to earn a 4-3 victory.
The Mayhem used an offensive outbreak to take an early commanding lead in the hockey game. Defenseman Brandon Pfeil started off the scoring just 1:07 into the hockey game off of an assist from his defensive partner Jeff Sanders. Then, with 14:04 left in the opening frame, John Siemer scored his first goal since December 30 to take a 2-0 lead. Stephen Pierog picked up the lone assist on the goal. Just about eight minutes later, Pierog picked up a goal of his own off a pass from Daniel Gentzler to make it 3-0 Macon. Knoxville's Doug Reid would stop the bleeding by scoring to make it 3-1. The Mayhem outshot the Ice Bears in the first period 13-11.
The Ice Bears got the lone goal in the second period, as Corey Hale took a drop pass from Reid and blasted it past Mayhem goaltender Jordan Ruby to make it 3-2. Knoxville outshot Macon 9-7 in the second frame.
At the 5:58 mark of the third period, Knoxville's Andrew Bonazza scored on the power play to tie the game at 3-3. At the 10:54 mark of the period, Chris Joseph scored for Macon on man advantage to retake the lead. The Mayhem would hold off a late Knoxville power play to win the game 4-3.
NOTABLE STATS
The win tonight is Macon's fourth straight victory, and they team now sits at 22-6-5 (49 points) - still three points behind Huntsville. They are now 14-3-2 on the road this season and are 16-1-2 when scoring first. When leading after one period, the Mayhem are now 10-0-1, and they are now 16-0-2 when leading after two periods.
Jordan Ruby made his sixth consecutive start tonight, saving 27 of the 30 shots he faced in the game. Ruby has now won four straight games and moves to 12-3-3 on the season.
Pfeil's goal was his first in with the Mayhem and his first in the SPHL. He now has two points in seven games played for Macon this season. Joseph's goal is his first career professional goal in his second pro season. He now has five points on the season.
Prior to tonight's game, the Mayhem had been outscored in the first period this season - with 23 goals for and 24 goals against. They now have 26 goals for and 25 against in the first period this season.
