Macon Mayhem News Release

(PELHAM, Ala.) - The Bulls fought back, but Josh Boyko shut the door as the Mayhem earned a big 3-2 shootout win in Birmingham.

Macon clearly wanted to start on a better note than the night before, as Max Messier set the tone with a fight just 2:20 into the game with Kenny Britton. The teams traded chances, but Macon struck first as the newcomer Chris Mott opened the scoring with his first goal with the Mayhem. Just three minutes later, Drew Welsch got back to his scoring ways to extend the lead and give the Mayhem a 2-0 lead heading into the second.

Birmingham certainly pushed in the middle frame, outshooting Macon 14-7, but it wasn't until the final five minutes of the period that they were finally able to get on the board as Arkhip Ledziankou broke the seal with his 14th of the season. Boyko had stopped 24 of 25 through the first two periods as the Mayhem held a 2-1 lead.

Just 27 seconds into the third, Drew Welsch went to the box for two minutes for goaltender interference, a power play that the Bulls made quick work of as Macgregor Sinclair scored just 12 seconds into the power play to tie the game. Boyko made 12 saves in the period as the Mayhem and the Bulls went to overtime, tied 2-2.

The Mayhem had the better of the chances in overtime, but neither team could score and the game headed to the shootout. Evan Beers scored the game-winner in the second round, and Justin Kelley sealed it in the third as Josh Boyko stopped all four Birmingham shooters and the Mayhem took a huge 3-2 win.

The Mayhem are in Pensacola on Sunday, and return home for their annual School Day Game on Thursday, February 26 at 10:30 am.
