Mavs Win Third Home Series Game
July 30, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
One night after suffering a heartbreaking loss to the 66ers, Thursday's match got off to a less than ideal start for the Mavs. On the second pitch of the game Alfredo Silverio hit a homer to get Inland Empire on the board.
Raben answered in the bottom of the inning with a homer out to center field to tie the game.
The 66ers had none on with two outs in the third, but managed to rally for three runs. After an infield single by Pedro Baez, Matt Wallach followed with an RBI double to break the tie.
Maikel Cleto then issued two walks before giving up a two-run single to Ramon Jean that put Inland Empire ahead 4-1.
Coming off a very strong start in San Jose, Cleto had to leave after just three innings, allowing eight hits and three walks.
The Mavs looked like they would cut into the lead in the fourth when they loaded the bases with one out. Shaffer hit into a double- play on a very controversial call at first base to end the inning.
However the momentum shifted in the fifth when the Mavs busted out for five runs, all with two outs. Raben delivered a two-run single to pull the Mavs within one. Two batters later, Rich Poythress drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game and send Ethan Martin (9-9) to the bench.
Given another chance, Shaffer broke the tie with a two-run single to put the Mavs in the lead for good.
Five more runs followed in the sixth. Kyle Seager hit a two-run homer for his first hit since his 32-game hit streak came to a close. Raben hit an RBI double, and Shaffer connected on a two-run double with two outs once again to make it 11-4.
Inland Empire hit a pair of solo homers in the seventh but would not get any closer. The Mavs scored their final run thanks to an error and wild pitch in the seventh as well.
The Maverick bullpen picked up the slack, allowing two runs and four hits over the final six innings. Cheyne Hann (2-0) earned the win, tossing two scoreless frames right after Cleto exited.
After winning just their third home series of the season, the Mavs will look to keep it going at Mavericks Stadium when they meet first- place Rancho Cucamonga at 7:05 p.m. Friday. Join the Mavericks for a Midway Home Solutions Family Feast Night, with all hot dogs and small sodas on sale for just $1! For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
