San Jose Giants News Release
Rancho Cucamonga scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead before the Quakes bullpen combined to shutout the Giants over the final three frames in a 5-3 victory over San Jose on Thursday evening at The Epicenter. Rancho Cucamonga earned a sweep of the three-game series as the Giants lost for the sixth time in their last seven contests. With the defeat, San Jose's overall record dropped to 57-47.
Drew Biery (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) belted his 13th home run of the season to lead the Giants offensive attack while Wendell Fairley (2-for-4) added a pair of hits. San Jose finished the game with only six hits and just one over the last four innings.
The Giants took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Juan Perez drew a one-out walk before Biery stepped to the plate and drove a fly ball over the fence in left center field for a two-run homer. San Jose though would manage just two baserunners over the remainder of the game as the Quakes eventually rallied.
In the bottom of the sixth, Giants starting pitcher Justin Fitzgerald issued a leadoff walk to Gabe Jacobo before a wild pitch advanced the runner to second. After Luis Jimenez singled to put runners on first and third, Angel Castillo reached on an infield single to shortstop plating Jacobo to make it 3-3. Following the game-tying hit, Edwin Quirarte was summoned from the bullpen. Jon Townsend was up next and he attempted a sacrifice bunt, however Quirarte threw out Jimenez at third for the first out of the inning.
Kevin Ramos was up next and he grounded a single into left field easily scoring Castillo with the go-ahead run. Townsend was thrown out at third on the play as he attempted to advance on the throw. Then with Rian Kiniry at the plate, Ramos was caught between second and third, but scored when Johnny Monell's throw glanced off the glove of shortstop Ehire Adrianza. Adrianza was charged with an error as the Quakes extended their lead to 5-3.
Rancho Cucamonga starter Orangel Arenas (5-1) was credited with the victory after tossing six innings with three runs (all earned) and five hits allowed. He walked two and struck out four. Nick Pugliese entered the game to begin the top of the seventh and promptly fired two perfect innings with three strikeouts. Jose Perez earned his first save of the year as he pitched around a one-out double from Juan Perez in the top of the ninth.
Fitzgerald (8-3) suffered the loss for the Giants after yielding four runs (all earned) on eight hits over five-plus innings of work. Fitzgerald walked one and struck out three.
The Giants initially took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Fairley singled with one out before Jose Flores smoked an RBI double into the left field corner. The Quakes though responded in the bottom of the second as Castillo singled with one out before Townsend doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third. Castillo then scored when Ramos lined a single into right while Townsend came home on Kiniry's groundout to second.
Fitzgerald recovered to throw scoreless third, fourth and fifth innings before the Quakes rallied in the bottom of the sixth.
