July 30, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release
Jorge Bucardo limited the Inland Empire 66ers to a single run and struck out six over six impressive innings as the San Jose Giants earned a 6-1 victory in the opener of a three-game series on Friday evening at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. Johnny Monell supplied the biggest hit of the game with a three-run homer helping the Giants snap a season-high tying four-game losing skid. The win improves San Jose's overall record to 58-47.
Bucardo (1-0) was making his California League debut after the right-hander was promoted from Augusta (Low-A) last Tuesday. He surrendered only four hits and didn't walk a hitter during his 97-pitch outing. Bucardo also finished strong retiring the last seven batters that he faced.
Monell (2-for-3, HR, 3 RBI) reached base in four plate appearances to lead a 10-hit Giants offensive attack. Juan Perez (2-for-5, 3B, RBI), Francisco Peguero (2-for-5) and Wendell Fairley (2-for-4, RBI) also contributed two hits apiece.
San Jose took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning against 66ers starter Josh Walter. Consecutive singles from Jose Flores and Drew Biery began the frame before Ehire Adrianza advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Fairley followed with a line drive single into right plating Flores while Joel Weeks then brought home Biery with a sacrifice fly to right.
Inland Empire's only run of the contest came in the bottom of the second inning as Matt Wallach led off with a double, advanced to third on Andres Perez's fly out and scored on a Bucardo wild pitch.
The Giants though immediately came back with three runs in the top of the third. Peguero led off with an infield single before Charlie Culberson reached on an error to put runners on first and second. Monell was up next and he blasted a 1-0 pitch from Walter over the fence in left for an opposite field three-run homer. The home run, Monell's 14th of the season, extended the San Jose lead to 5-1.
The Giants scored their final run of the night in the top of the sixth as Adrianza drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on Fairley's single and scored on Perez's two-out single into left.
Bucardo worked around a one-out double in the third and a two-out double in the fourth before setting down the 66ers 1-2-3 in the fifth and sixth innings.
Eric Stolp (2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) relieved Bucardo to begin the bottom of the seventh and tossed a pair of scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Ben Wilshire (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) then worked the ninth to seal the victory.
Walter (1-6) suffered the loss for the 66ers after yielding six runs (five earned) on eight hits over six innings. Walter walked three and struck out one.
