THE SAN JOSE GIANTS... continue their road trip this evening wit h the opener of a three-game series against the Inland Empire 66ers at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. San Jose was swept in a three-game set by the host Rancho Cucamonga Quakes to begin the road trip. The Quakes posted a 4-3 victory on Tuesday before a 6-5 win on Wednesday and a 5-3 triumph in the series finale last night. Rancho Cucamonga scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning yesterday to take the lead before relievers Nick Pugliese (2 IP) and Jose Perez (1 IP) combined to shutout the Giants over the last three frames. Drew Biery hit his 13th home run of the season - a two-run blast in the top of the fourth - to lead the San Jose offensive attack. Starting pitcher Justin Fitzgerald suffered the loss after surrendering four runs (all earned) on eight hits over five-plus innings of work.
Media Coverage... The entire series from San Bernardino can be heard live on www.sjgiants.com with Joe Ritzo calling all of the action. All 140 games this season will be aired on the club's official website.
Losing Streak Reaches Four Games... The Giants bring a season-high tying four-game losing streak into tonight's contest to drop their second half record to 12-22 - worst in the California League. San Jose last lost five in a row during the 2008 season when they dropped six straight from July 12-18. The Giants are 11-16 in July and will finish with their first losing month of the season. San Jose posted a 13-8 record in April before a 19-12 mark in May and a 14-11 record in June.
Bucardo To Make Debut Tonight... Jorge Bucardo was added to the Giants roster from Augusta (Low-A) last Tuesday and is expected to make the start on the mound in tonight's series opener. The 20-year old right- hander was 9-4 with a 2.21 ERA in 19 games (18 starts) with the GreenJackets this season. Bucardo, a South Atlantic League All-Star this season, struck out 95 over 114 innings and limited the opposition to a .203 batting average. He was tied for first in the league in wins and fourth in ERA at the time of his promotion.
Monell Finds Power Stroke... Catcher Johnny Monell has hit five home runs in his last eight games and is batting at a .406 clip (13-for-32) during that stretch. His 13 home runs this season is only one behind Charlie Culberson for the team lead. Monell is batting .340 with eight home runs since the All-Star break after hitting just .220 with five home runs during the first half.
Rare Series Versus The 66ers ... This series marks the first time this season that San Jose will play Inland Empire. Prior to the series, the 66ers were the only team the Giants had yet to play this year. San Jose is concluding a stretch (July 10-August 1) when they'll play 18 out of 21 games against teams from the South Division. The Giants are 14-17 against Southern Division opponents this season.
Close Losses... The Giants are 5-13 (.278) in one and two-run games since the second half began.
Peguero's Spectacular Second Half... Outfielder Francisco Peguero has been San Jose's top hitter during the second half as he possesses a . 382 batting average since the All-Star break. Over his last nine games, Peguero is hitting .475 (19-for-40) with three triples, three home runs and eight RBI's. The current hot streak has raised his season batting average to .314. Peguero has already set the San Jose Giants single-season triples record with 14 this year. He currently leads the California League in triples and is third in stolen bases (36).
Injury Report... Second baseman Charlie Culberson (left shoulder strain) hasn't played since last Sunday and is considered day-to-day. Culberson leads the Giants in batting average (.327), home runs (14) and RBI's (61). All-Star pitcher Eric Surkamp (hip) is currently on the disabled list and is not expected to pitch on the current road trip. Surkamp is third in the California League in ERA (3.11) and tied for fourth in strikeouts (108).
Stolen Base Threats... The Giants are leading the California League with 171 stolen bases - 10 ahead of the next-closest team (Rancho Cucamonga). Six players currently on the roster have reached double figures in steals: Francisco Peguero (36), Ehire Adrianza (24), Charlie Culberson (20), James Simmons (15), Juan Perez (14) and Johnny Monell (10). The San Jose Giants single-season record for stolen bases is 233 (1989).
San Jose Wins League Record Sixth Consecutive First Half Title... The San Jose Giants won their California League record sixth consecutive first half North Division title this season. The Giants finished the first half with a 45-25 mark - eight games ahead of both the Modesto Nuts (37-33) and Visalia Rawhide (37-33). By virtue of winning the first half, San Jose secures a berth in the playoffs and will receive a first round bye. The Giants have won three league championships (2005, 2007, 2009) in the last five seasons and will be attempting to win back-to-back titles for the first time in franchise history this September. San Jose will open the playoffs on Saturday, September 11 at Municipal Stadium with Game One of the best-of-five North Division Series. The previous league record for consecutive first half division titles was three (Visalia).
Inland Empire 66ers... The Inland Empire 66ers, an affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, enter tonight's action with an overall record of 42-62. The 66ers are 16-18 in the second half - four games behind the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes for the top spot in the South Division. Inland Empire is a league-worst 15-35 at home this season (27-27 on the road). The 66ers are fifth in the California League in batting average (.275), ninth in runs scored (4.8), eighth in home runs (71) and seventh in ERA (4.71). Former San Jose Giant Travis Denker is batting .333 (third in the league) with seven home runs and 44 RBI's this season.
