High Desert Mavericks News Release

Saturday night was Backwards Night at Mavericks Stadium, and it turned out it applied to more than just the special jerseys the Mavs were wearing as well as the in-game promotions. Despite outhitting the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 16-5, the Mavs ended up losing 4-3.

The Mavs had no trouble getting men on base, but could not bring those guys home. They went just 3-for-17 with one RBI with runners in scoring position. They stranded 12 men on base, eight in scoring position. Of their 16 hits, only two went for extra bases.

On the other hand, all five of the Quakes hits went for bases, including three solo home runs.

Angel Castillo got the Quakes on the board with a two-out RBI triple in the second.

The next inning, Alberto Rosario popped a ball up in foul ground, but Eddy Martinez-Esteve could not make the catch. On the next pitch, Rosario homered to make it 2-0.

With two outs in the fourth, Clay Fuller hit another home run to give the Quakes a three-run lead.

The Mavs had runners at the corners with none out in the fifth. They would only score once on an RBI groundout by Johermyn Chavez to make it 3-1.

Rich Poythress hit a double to start off the bottom of the eighth, but next two hitters struck out. Trevor Coleman then singled to right, but it wasn't deep enough to score Poythress. Kuo Hui Lo then legged out an infield single to bring Poythress home and pull the Mavs within one.

With the tying run at second, the Quakes brought in closer Eddie McKiernan, who induced a groundout by Kyle Seager to end the inning.

Gabe Jacobo hit the third and final home run of the night for the Quakes in the ninth to give them all important insurance run they would end up needing.

With a runner at first and two outs, Poythress lined a single to left field. Eric Oliver misplayed the ball, allowing a run to score and put they tying run at second.

McKiernan shook it off and got Jake Shaffer to ground out to end the game and claim his 22nd save.

Making his Cal League debut, Quakes starting pitcher Garrett Richards gave up 10 hits over 5.2 innings, but limited the Mavs to just one run to claim the win. Richards (1-0) struck out seven and walked just one.

Kenn Kasparek only gave up three hits over seven innings, but walked away with the loss. Kasparek (7-3) allowed three runs, walked two, and struck out five. He also retired 10 the last 11 batters he faced.

The Mavs will head for yet another rubber match Sunday when they face the Quakes at 5:05 p.m. For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
