San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants jumped out to an eight-run lead after 5 1/2 innings before holding off the Inland Empire 66ers to earn an 8-6 victory on Saturday evening at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. Inland Empire nearly overcame the large deficit as the 66ers brought the potential winning run to the plate with one out in the bottom of the ninth before Jason Stoffel escaped to pick-up the save. San Jose has won the first two games of the series to improve their overall record to 59-47.
Michael Sandoval (2-for-5, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) connected for his third home run of the season to lead an 11-hit Giants offensive attack. Wendell Fairley (3-for-4, 2B) added three hits while Johnny Monell (2-for-4, RBI, SB) contributed a pair of hits and scored three runs.
Oliver Odle (11-5) recorded his league-leading 11th victory of the season after taking a shutout into the sixth inning. Odle finished his outing with two runs allowed (both earned) on six hits over six innings of work. The right-hander struck out five and walked none. Stoffel retired both batters that he faced with the potential tying runs on base to notch his 18th save.
San Jose used a pair of clutch two-out hits to plate three runs in the top of the first inning against 66ers starting pitcher Bobby Blevins. Juan Perez started the game with his 30th double of the year - a fly ball off the fence in deep left center field. Blevins recovered to set down the next two hitters, but then surrendered an RBI single to Monell to make it 1-0. Sandoval followed with a towering two-run homer to left center field extending the lead to 3-0.
The Giants added a single run in the top of the second as Fairley and Matt Klimas each singled to put runners on first and third with none out. Perez then bounced into a fielder's choice to shortstop plating Fairley for a 4-0 advantage.
In the top of the third, Monell singled with one out before stealing second base. After Drew Biery drew a two-out walk, Blevins uncorked a wild pitch advancing the runners to second and third. Ehire Adrianza then lined a single into center field to bring home both Monell and Biery to increase the lead to 6-0.
San Jose kept the pressure on with single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings to make it 8-0. In the top of the fifth, Monell was hit by a pitch with two outs before Sandoval clubbed an RBI double to deep right center. Then in the sixth, Adrianza led off by reaching on an error, advanced to third on Fairley's double and scored when Perez grounded out.
Odle surrendered a one-out double to Chris Gutierrez in the bottom of the first inning and then didn't allow another baserunner until Scott Van Slyke singled with one out in the fourth. Odle struck out the side in the fourth inning before working around a pair of two-out singles in the fifth. Inland Empire finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning on consecutive RBI groundouts from Pedro Baez and Steven Caseres to make it 8-2.
Ryan Verdugo (1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) relieved Odle to begin the bottom of the seventh and promptly allowed a solo home run to the first batter that he faced, Andres Perez. In the eighth, Scott Nestor (1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) issued a leadoff walk to Gutierrez before Caseres' two-out, RBI single brought the 66ers to within 8-4.
Inland Empire continued their comeback in the bottom of the ninth as Giants reliever Brian Anderson (1/3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO) surrendered consecutive one-out singles to Tony Delmonico and Johan Garcia. Ramon Jean followed with a ground ball that was fielded by Adrianza in the hole, however the throw to second in an attempt to force out Garcia was wild and bounced into shallow right field. Jean was credited with an infield single as Delmonico scored on the error to make it 8-5.
Anderson then walked Gutierrez to load the bases and bring the potential winning run to the plate. Stoffel (2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) though was summoned from the bullpen and he retired Van Slyke on a sacrifice fly to left as Garcia scored before Baez grounded out weakly to first base ending the game.
Blevins (1-5) suffered the loss for the 66ers after yielding six runs (all earned) on seven hits over three innings.
