Carraway, Early Hitting Key to Mavs Win
August 1, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
One day after struggling to garner key hits, the Mavs plated three runs in the first and got another strong start by Andrew Carraway in a 7-2 win over Rancho Cucamonga Sunday evening.
Despite collecting 16 hits on Saturday, the Mavs could not come up with big hits and fell against the Quakes. The timely hitting returned early in Sunday's game when the Mavs scored three times.
A wild pitch got the Mavs on the board, but Rich Poythress and Kuo Hui Lo each collected two-out RBI singles to give the Mavs a 3-0 lead.
Eddy Martinez-Esteve hit a line drive solo home run out to left field in the third to put the Mavs up by four.
The Quakes got on the board in the fourth inning, courtesy of a two-out RBI double by Jon Townsend.
It was the only run surrendered by Carraway (8-5) who tossed his fifth straight quality start. Over seven innings, Carraway scattered eight hits, tied a season high with three walks and struck out four.
The Mavs got some separation in the bottom of the fourth. With none on and two out, Kyle Seager and Edilio Colina each notched hits to keep the inning alive.
Johermyn Chavez stepped up next and got in a 2-0 count. He would demolish the next pitch for his 27th home run of the season and to extend his hit streak to 22 games.
Down by six, the Quakes would threaten a few times, but Carraway found a way to constantly escape jams at keep them well behind. Twice Rancho Cucamonga had a runner in scoring position with none out but would not score. Carraway also limited the Quakes to a 2-for-11 mark with runners in scoring position.
After Carraway exited, the Quakes would score once in the ninth, but it was too little, too late.
Manaurys Correa's rough 2010 continued in his first game against the Mavericks. Correa (1-9) allowed seven runs and 12 hits over five innings. He did set a new season high with six strikeouts.
After a successful home stand, the Mavs will take Monday off and hit the road on Tuesday. They'll face the Modesto Nuts at 7:05 p.m., and live coverage will start at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
