Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Adelanto, CA - Garrett Richards won his California League debut and the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes took sole possession of first place in the South Division, hanging on for a 4-3 win over the High Desert Mavericks on Saturday night in Adelanto.

The Quakes had five base hits, all for extra-bases, as they pulled out a win despite being out-hit by an incredible 16-5 margin.

Closer Eddie McKiernan, who earned the final out of the eighth, gave up an unearned run in the ninth, but held on to earn his 22nd save of the year. After getting the first out of the ninth in a two-run game, McKiernan allowed a single to Johermyn Chavez, bringing the tying run to the plate. Eddy Martinez-Esteve followed by flying out to center field for the second out, setting up a match-up with the league's top run-producer, Rich Poythress. Poythress ripped a single to left fielder Eric Oliver, who misplayed the sharp liner, allowing Chavez to score to make it 4-3. McKiernan buckled down though, getting Jake Shaffer to ground out, ending the game.

The Quakes got individual runs off Mavericks' starter Kenn Kasparek (7-3) in the second, third and fourth, taking a 3-0 lead.

Angel Castillo's RBI triple knocked in Gabe Jacobo for a 1-0 lead in the second. Alberto Rosario ripped a solo homer in the third, his fourth of the year, giving the Quakes a 2-0 lead. Clay Fuller hit a solo shot in the fourth, his fifth in a Quakes' uniform, making it a 3-0 game.

Richards had base-runners to contend with all night long, but withstood the challenge, as he forced High Desert to strand six men in the first four innings.

The Mavs got to Richards for a run in the fifth, as Kyle Seager doubled, advanced to third on a single by Edilio Colina, then scored on an RBI groundout by Chavez, making it 3-1.

In the sixth, Richards had trouble getting the final out, as he allowed back-to-back two-out singles and was removed from the game. Christian Scholl came out of the bullpen to keep the Mavs off the board though, getting Seager to ground into an inning-ending fielder's choice.

Scholl got touched for a run in the eighth, as Kuo Hui Lo beat out an infield single to drive in Poythress, making it a one-run game at 3-2.

Gabe Jacobo hit his team-leading 18th homer of the year in the ninth off Mavs' reliever Bobby LaFromboise, giving the Quakes a much-needed insurance run at 4-2.

Richards (1-0) allowed just the one run on ten hits over 5 2/3 innings in the win. The righthander struck out seven and walked just one in winning his debut.

The win for the Quakes (21-15, 60-46) puts them one game up over High Desert in the South Division standings.

The Quakes will look for two of three in the series, sending Manaurys Correa (1-8) to the mound on Sunday at 5:05pm, against High Desert righthander Andrew Carraway (7-5).

On Tuesday, August 3rd, the Quakes will return to The Epicenter, taking on the Lake Elsinore Storm in the opening game of a six-game home stand. The upcoming home stand includes $1 Family Feast Night and Faith Night, coming up on Friday, August 6th. Great seats are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or get them online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter on Wednesday night...Go Quakes!
