Mavs Good Finishers against Lancaster
August 24, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
After a couple of tough games against Lancaster to start their series, the Mavs ended their regular season slate with the JetHawks on a high note, winning 10-3 Monday night at Mavericks Stadium.
The Mavs were tremendous with two outs, scoring six runs and notching half of their 14 hits when down to their final out.
Although it wasn't with two outs, Johermyn Chavez began the scoring with a two-run homer in the first, his 31st of the year to put the Mavs in front.
The Mavs rallied for four more in the second, the last three with two outs. After a Kyle Seager RBI groundout, the Mavs had a runner at third with two down.
Edilio Colina hit an RBI single to add to the lead. An error by Jonathan Villar kept the inning alive, and Jake Shaffer took advantage with a two-run single to make it 6-0.
The JetHawks responded with a couple of two outs runs of their own in the third. Brandon Barnes hit an RBI double, and Brian Pellegrini followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to four.
Both teams were quiet at the plate until the sixth. Villar led off the inning with a homer to center field, making it 6-3.
The Mavs began to pull away with three in the bottom half. A baserunning blunder turned a good start to the innning into a scenario with a runner at second and two outs. The JetHawks intentionally walked Rich Poythress, but Shaffer followed with an RBI double.
Ji-Man Choi and Denny Almonte each chipped in with RBI singles to make it 9-3.
Poythress plated the game's final run in the seventh, an RBI single that appropriately came with two outs.
During their four-game home losing streak, the Mavs had allowed 51 runs. Kenn Kasparek brought some stability to the mound, tossing seven solid innings.
Kasparek (9-4) allowed three runs and seven hits over seven innings. He walked three and struck out four.
JetHawks pitcher Leandro Cespedes labored from the start, and couldn't make it out of the second inning. Cespedes (2-6) allowed six runs and five hits over just 1.2 innings. He walked four with two strikeouts, throwing close to 80 pitches.
The Mavs now head to Inland Empire for three games beginning Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage starts at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
