Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Lake Elsinore, CA - Ryan Chaffee's quality start, backed by three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, helped the Quakes complete a three-game sweep of the Lake Elsinore Storm, as they held on for a 3-2 win on Monday night at The Diamond.
Rancho Cucamonga's third straight win puts the Quakes back into a first-place tie, with both Lake Elsinore and High Desert, atop the South Division Second Half Standings.
Darwin Perez's RBI groundout in the top of the fifth inning broke a 2-2 tie and put the Quakes ahead to stay. From there, the game was dominated by pitching, with the Quakes holding on for their third straight win overall.
The Quakes took advantage of a pair of Lake Elsinore errors to take an early lead on Storm starter Adam Schrader. Angel Castillo reached on an error to open the second. After stealing second base, Castillo moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Luis Jimenez. Dillon Baird walked to put runners at the corners with one out, but Schrader got Richard Cates to pop up for the second out. Kevin Ramos followed with a drive off the right-field wall. On the play, right fielder Rymer Liriano bobbled the ball, allowing Baird to score from first to give the Quakes a 2-0 lead.
The lead lasted just two batters into the bottom of the second though, as Chaffee walked Vince Belnome to open the inning, then surrendered a two-run shot to Cody Decker, his 23rd of the year, tying the game at 2-2.
The game remained tied until the fifth, when the Quakes tallied the final run of the night to take the lead for good. Alberto Rosario led off the frame against Schrader (1-1) with a double down the left-field line, then moved to third on a Mike Trout groundout. Perez followed with a hard ground ball to Decker at first base. Decker stepped on first, then threw home to try and get Rosario. The throw was late though, as Rosario beat the tag, putting the Quakes up 3-2.
Chaffee retired the final six batters he faced, turning it over to Jose Perez in the seventh. Perez pitched around a two-out double in the seventh, then worked a 1-2-3 eighth. Eddie McKiernan followed Perez, working a perfect ninth to secure his 24th save of the year.
Chaffee (6-6) allowed just two runs on two hits, striking out five batters over six strong innings.
In search of their fourth straight win, the Quakes (29-27, 68-58) continue their road trip on Tuesday night, opening a three-game set in Bakersfield. Kyle Hurst (2-3) takes on Bakersfield righthander Danny Gutierrez (0-3) in the series-opener at 7:15pm.
The Quakes return to The Epicenter, opening the final home stand of the regular season on Friday, August 27th. Friday night is another $1 Family Feast Night, as fans will enjoy $1 Hot Dogs, $1 Coca-Cola Products and $1 Ice Cream Sandwiches, thanks to KFROG 95.1. Gates open at 6:05pm and tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
