RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - A six-run first inning led to Rancho Cucamonga's demise on Wednesday night, falling 11-4 to High Desert in the rubber game of the series at LoanMart Field.

The Mavericks (21-15, 58-48) took advantage of some early control problems from Quakes' starter Matt Shelton (0-1), who is trying to develop a knuckleball as his primary pitch. Chris Garia opened the game with a walk before stealing second and third base. Joe Jackson drew a walk and Royce Bolinger was hit by an errant knuckler, loading the bases. Ronald Guzman singled to center field, scoring Garia and Jackson for the first runs of the game. Kevin Torres singled to reload the bases. Kellin Deglan crushed a grand slam over the right field foul pole, capping the offensive outburst to give High Desert a 6-0 advantage. For Deglan, it was his 12th home run of the season and second of the series.

The Quakes (20-18, 61-47) were able to get a run back against Mavericks' starter Luis Parra (2-4) in the bottom of the first. Johan Mieses lined a single to center field. Brandon Dixon walked and Cody Bellinger singled to load the bases. Jacob Scavuzzo hit a sacrifice fly to right field, chasing Mieses home to trim the deficit to 6-1.

Rancho Cucamonga continued to fight back in the bottom of the second against. Joey Curletta and Delvis Morales opened the inning with back-to-back singles. A wild pitch by Parra moved the runners to second and third. Spencer Navin's groundout to third allowed Curletta to come home while advancing Morales to third. Tim Locastro reached on a bunt single as Morales crossed home plate, cutting the margin to 6-3.

After that, Parra settled down. The left-hander gave up three runs, seven hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings to earn the victory.

High Desert gave Parra some additional run support in the top of the third. Guzman and Torres induced consecutive walks from Shelton. Alberto Triunfel singled to center field, plating Guzman for a 7-3 lead.

The visitors tacked on a couple more runs in the fourth against the right-hander. With two outs in the inning, Bolinger doubled to right field. Guzman slugged a two-run homer to right for his fifth of the year, staking the Mavericks to a 9-3 cushion.

Over the course of four innings, Shelton allowed nine runs, six hits, five walks and two hit batters while striking out three.

High Desert flexed its muscle again in the sixth against reliever Michael Johnson. Jackson reached on a two-out walk before Bolinger went deep for the second time in the series, a two-run blast off the batter's eye in center field for his 12th of the season, increasing the lead to 11-3.

The Quakes had one last flurry in the bottom of the ninth against Mavericks' reliever David Perez. Jacob Scavuzzo reached on an error by the shortstop, Triunfel. Curletta singled for his second hit of the game, placing runners at first and second. Morales delivered his second hit of the contest, a single to left field that brought Scavuzzo home. Perez then retired the final two batters, preserving the 11-4 win for High Desert while recording a three-inning save for his first of the season.

The loss brings Rancho Cucamonga's seven-game homestand to a close with a 5-2 record. They are now 35-22 at LoanMart Field this season, still the best home record in the California League.
