San Jose Giants News Release

MODESTO, CA - Nuts starting pitcher Zach Jemiola threw seven scoreless innings as Modesto avoided the sweep with a 6-1 win over the San Jose Giants on Wednesday evening at John Thurman Field. The Nuts built a 4-0 lead with two runs in both the third and fourth innings before cruising to the victory. The Giants (25-14) still won two out of three in the series, but fell one game behind Modesto (26-13) in the second half North Division race with Wednesday's defeat.

Tyler Horan (2-for-4, 2 2B) doubled twice while Christian Arroyo (2-for-4, 2B) and Angel Villalona (2-for-4, 2B) added two hits apiece to lead San Jose offensively. Ryder Jones (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) drove home the only Giants run of the night with a ninth-inning double.

San Jose had an opportunity to take the early lead in the top of the third inning against Jemiola. With the game scoreless, Horan led off with a double to deep left center. Seth Harrison followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance Horan to third. Ty Ross then flied out to right as Horan tagged and sprinted towards home, but was thrown out at the plate by Nuts right fielder Drew Weeks to end the inning.

Jason Forjet started on the mound for the Giants and began his night with two scoreless innings retiring six out of the first seven Modesto hitters. The Nuts then rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to move in front. Troy Stein was hit by a pitch to leadoff before Raimel Tapia drew a one-out walk to put runners on first and second. Mike Benjamin, Jr. was up next and he lined a single into shallow left center plating Stein with the first run of the game. Tapia advanced to third on the hit and then immediately scored to make it 2-0 when Rosell Herrera hit a sacrifice fly to right.

Modesto added to their lead with two more runs against Forjet in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Dillon Thomas doubled down the right field line and scored when the next batter, Ashley Graeter, singled into center. Stein was then hit by a pitch for a second time before Emerson Jimenez delivered an RBI single up the middle for a 4-0 advantage.

The Giants threatened against Jemiola in the top of the fourth as Arroyo singled with one out before a Villalona two-out single, but Jones struck out swinging to end the inning. In the sixth, Arroyo reached second with one out on a two-base throwing error committed by Jimenez at shortstop. However, Carbonell flied out and Villalona struck out to keep the score at 4-0.

The Nuts then pushed across single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to stretch their lead to 6-0. With Jeff Soptic (1 1/3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) on the mound, Stein reached on a one-out error in the bottom of the sixth. Stein then stole two bases and scored on a two-out wild pitch. In the seventh, Ryan McMahon delivered a one-out RBI double to plate Modesto's sixth and final run of the contest.

The Giants' only run came in the top of the ninth as Villalona led off with a double down the left field line and scored when the next batter, Jones, smacked a double to deep right center. With two outs, Harrison reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners, but Nuts reliever Troy Neiman induced Ty Ross to groundout to finish the game.

Jemiola (5-3) allowed only four hits over his seven innings of work to pick-up the win. He walked one and struck out six.

Forjet (4-4) was saddled with the loss after surrendering four runs (all earned) on five hits over five innings. The right-hander walked a season-high three and struck out four.
