Giants Begin Four-Game Series At Lake Elsinore Tonight
The San Jose Giants continue their road trip this evening with the opener of a four-game series against the Lake Elsinore Storm at The Diamond. Jake Dunning is slated to make the start on the mound for the Giants tonight. Dunning worked six scoreless innings last Friday against Stockton in his first start with San Jose this season. He joined the Giants from the Sacramento (AAA) disabled list last week. Dunning was 6-3 with a 4.74 ERA and 10 saves for San Jose in 2011 before making 30 relief appearances with the San Francisco Giants over the 2013 and 2014 seasons.
Two Of Three In Modesto
Despite last night's loss, the Giants earned a series win in Modesto to open their road trip. San Jose posted victories of 5-1 on Monday and 3-2 on Tuesday over the Nuts. The Giants' sweep bid then fell short with a 6-1 defeat last night. San Jose's only two road series wins this season have come at Modesto (three-game sweep from July 11-13 and two of three from August 3-5).
Above .500
Monday's win over Modesto to begin the road trip moved the Giants above .500 overall for the first time since the opening week of the season (2-1 on April 11). San Jose's low mark of the year came on May 18 when they dropped 14 games below .500 (12-26).
Winning Ways
The Giants enter this evening's contest having posted a 21-7 record in their last 28 games. San Jose boasts a team ERA of 2.17 (64 ER/265.1 IP) during the 28-game stretch.
In The Standings
The Giants are currently in a tie for second place in the second half North Division standings with a 25-14 record - one game behind Modesto (26-13) for the top spot. San Jose's overall record of 55-54 puts them one game ahead of Stockton (54-55) for the North Wild Card lead. The Giants were 11 games behind the Ports in the Wild Card race on July 4.
Christian Arroyo
Shortstop Christian Arroyo has hit safely in 18 out of his last 20 games and is batting at a. 347 clip in the second half (36 games). The former first round draft pick has 22 doubles in just 63 games this season while his overall batting average of .326 leads the team.
Versus The Storm
San Jose suffered a four-game sweep at the hands of the Lake Elsinore Storm in their only previous meeting this season (May 4-7 at Municipal Stadium). The Giants lost the four games by a total of just five runs. San Jose hasn't been swept in a series since their match-up with the Storm. The Giants are 22-16 (.579) against South Division opponents this year.
Ragira Surges In Second Half
Brian Ragira is batting .310 in the second half (32 games) after hitting just .207 in the first half (49 games). Ragira has hit 29 home runs with the San Jose Giants over the last two seasons. Last year in the second half, he hit .297 with 15 homers after batting just .224 with five home runs before the All-Star break.
Dominant Bullpen
Since the beginning of July, the Giants bullpen has fashioned a stellar 1.85 ERA. Jake Smith (T9th, 95) is the only reliever in the California League to rank among the top 20 in strikeouts. San Jose is the lone team in the league to have not lost a game this season when leading after eight innings (46-0).
Angel Villalona Home Run Tracker
First baseman Angel Villalona has hit 31 career home runs with the San Jose Giants. Villalona slugged nine homers with San Jose in 2009, 14 home runs during his 2013 All-Star season and has eight homers this year (in 38 games). Villalona needs three more home runs to move into the top five in team history (Giuseppe Chiaramonte ranks fifth with 34 HR).
Opponent Notes: Lake Elsinore Storm
The Lake Elsinore Storm, an affiliate of the San Diego Padres, are just 9-30 in the second half and own the worst overall record in the league (40-69). The Storm have lost 13 out of their last 15 games. Lake Elsinore is ninth in the league in batting average (.247) and ninth in ERA (5.02).
