Mavericks win over Giants

July 17, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

Andrew Carraway carried a shutout into the ninth inning, and the Mavs got off to a hot start at the plate to cruise to an 8-1 win over the San Jose Giants Friday night at Mavericks Stadium.

Carraway (6-5) tossed a career-best 8.1 innings, limiting the Giants to just one run and nine hits. He was two outs away from the shutout, but ran out of gas in the ninth, finally relenting when Matt Klimas collected an RBI single.

Carraway got off to a great start, retiring his first nine hitters and 13 of the first 14 Giants to step to the plate. He struck out three with just one walk.

What make the start even more remarkable was how much Carraway had struggled to pitch effectively at home. He had allowed 30 runs in his last four starts at Mavericks Stadium, and had not claimed a win at home since April 16.

The Mavs offense got behind him early, putting up six runs through the first three innings. Eddy Martinez-Esteve hit a two-out RBI single in the first to get the scoring started.

Four runs crossed in the second, as six of the first seven hitters reached safely. Shaver Hansen drove in the first run to make it 2-0. Kyle Seager followed with an RBI single to extend his hit streak to 23 games.

Edilio Colina then collected an RBI double, and Rich Poythress also added an RBI single two batters later to make it 5-0.

That spelled the end for Giants pitcher Eric Stolp, who was bounced after just 1.1 innings. Stolp (4-8) allowed five runs and six hits in his brief time on the mound with two walks and one strikeouts. In three starts against the Mavericks this year, Stolp has now allowed 18 runs in just 9.2 innings.

The bats cooled down a bit until the sixth. Trevor Coleman blasted a two-run homer to put the Mavs up 8-0.

The Mavs also were uncharacteristically aggressive on the bases, stealing a season-high five bases.

After avoiding a sweep, the Mavs will look to start their next series against Inland Empire on the right note when they play at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Mavericks Stadium. The Mavs will be paying tribute to the Salvation Army, including a post-game fireworks show. For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
