Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Bakersfield, CA - Blaze starting pitcher Kennil Gomez turned in eight strong innings on Friday night, as the Bakersfield Blaze avoided the sweep, defeating the Quakes by a score of 5-2.
Gomez (3-7) allowed just one run on five hits over eight innings, earning the win and ending the Quakes' three-game winning streak.
The Quakes' lone run off of Gomez came in the fourth, when Luis Jimenez went deep to left-center field, putting Rancho on the board first at 1-0.
Quakes' starter Matt Shoemaker was brilliant over the first three innings, retiring all nine hitters he faced. That stretch ended in the fourth though, as four of the first six Blaze hitters to hit in the fourth all collected hits. Miguel Velazquez hit a two-run double to put the Blaze in front at 2-1. Two batters later, Mike Bianucci picked up a two-out RBI single, plating Velazquez for a 3-1 lead.
Shoemaker (7-7) gave up two more runs in the seventh, as the Blaze took a 5-1 lead. Jose Felix and David Paisano each had an RBI hit for Bakersfield in the inning, chasing Shoemaker after 6 2/3 innings.
The Quakes never got going offensively, collecting just six hits on the night.
Angel Castillo capped the scoring with a long home run to center field, taking over the team lead with 12 on the year, as his solo shot off Blaze reliever Corey Young made it 5-2. Young got the final out of the ninth though, getting Eric Oliver to ground out to end the game.
The Quakes (13-9, 52-40) now lead High Desert by just one game in the South Division. The six-game road trip continues on Saturday, as the Quakes travel to Stockton to face the Ports. Manny Flores (3-5) takes on Fabian Williamson (0-0) of the Ports, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
On Tuesday, July 20th, the Quakes return to The Epicenter, opening a three-game home stand against Bakersfield. The upcoming home stand includes a GIVE Recycle Tuesday, an early-morning 10:35am game and a Buffalo Wild Wings Thirsty Thursday. Tickets can be purchased by calling (909) 481-5000 or anytime online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter on Saturday night...Go Quakes!
