San Jose Giants News Release
High Desert scored six runs in the first three innings while starting pitcher Andrew Carraway took a shutout into the top of the ninth as the Mavericks cruised to an 8-1 victory over the San Jose Giants on Friday evening at Stater Bros. Stadium. Carraway scattered nine hits and allowed just one run over 8 1/3 innings as High Desert salvaged a game in the three-game series. With the loss, San Jose's overall record drops to 52-40.
Juan Perez (2-for-5, 2B), Francisco Peguero (2-for-5) and Drew Biery (2-for-4) each finished with a pair of hits to lead the Giants offensively. San Jose finished the contest with 10 hits, but stranded 11 runners on base, including nine in the last four innings.
High Desert quickly jumped in front with a single run in the bottom of the first inning against San Jose starter Eric Stolp. With two outs, Johermyn Chavez singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, stole third base and then came home on Eddy Martinez-Esteve's line drive single into right field.
The Mavericks then took control of the game with a four-run bottom of the second inning. Denny Almonte began the frame by drawing a walk before stealing second base. After Trevor Coleman grounded out, Shaver Hansen lined a single into center field plating Almonte to make it 2-0. Hansen promptly stole second and scored when the next batter, Kyle Seager, delivered a single. After Seager stole a base, Edilio Colina hammered an RBI double into the left field corner extending the lead to 4-0. Chavez followed by drawing a walk and then Rich Poythress grounded a single into left bringing home Colina for a 5-0 advantage. Stolp, who retired only one out of the seven batters that he faced in the second inning, was removed from the game after allowing Poythress' single.
Stolp (4-8) suffered the loss after surrendering five runs (all earned) on six hits over 1 1/3 innings - the shortest start for a Giants pitcher this season. The right-hander walked two and struck out one.
High Desert moved in front by a 6-0 margin in the bottom of the third as Coleman doubled with one out against reliever Edwin Quirarte and then scored on Colina's two-out bloop single into right.
In the bottom of the sixth against Kyle Woodruff, Kuo Hui Lo singled with one out before Coleman belted a two-out, two-run homer to deep center field making it 8-0.
Carraway began his outing by retiring nine consecutive Giants hitters as Perez gave San Jose their first baserunner with a double to leadoff the top of the fourth. In the sixth, Ehire Adrianza drew a two-out walk before Peguero singled, but Carraway induced Michael Sandoval to bounce into a fielder's choice to shortstop.
The Giants threatened in the top of the seventh as Charlie Culberson led off with a single before Biery's one-out single put runners on first and second. However, Carraway retired the next two hitters, Jose Flores and Matt Klimas, on groundouts to maintain the shutout. In the eighth, Peguero and Sandoval delivered back-to-back two-out singles, but Culberson struck out to the end the inning.
San Jose finally broke through in the top of the ninth as Biery singled with one out before Flores was hit by a pitch. Klimas was up next and he lined a single into left center field plating Biery with the Giants' only run of the night. Blake Moran was then summoned from the bullpen and after surrendering a single to Perez to load the bases, he fanned both Adrianza and Peguero to finish the game.
Carraway (6-5) struck out three and walked one during his 107-pitch performance.
