Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks defeated the Wichita Thunder 4-1 in front of sellout crowd at the Independence Events Center. Friday night was the first of ten meetings between the two rivals in the Independence Cup series.
The game was scoreless through the first period, but not without plenty of opportunities for both sides. The Mavericks led shots on goal 14-7 over the Thunder in period one.
Missouri and Wichita came back onto the ice with a new energy in the second period, but it was not until the 8:10 mark that Colton Hayes would notch his first point of the season for the Mavericks and the first goal of the game. Wichita was quick to respond with goal from Jared Walker on the power play. The hero of period would be the king himself, as Colt King scored not one, but two goals in his return game after a 3-game suspension.
A 3-1 lead did not stop the Mavericks from putting up one more on the board in the third period, as Andrew Courtney gave Missouri their second power play goal of the night.
Number one star of the game, Colt King recognizes the team effort it takes for the Mavericks to have this successful start to the season. "We have a lot of the right components it takes to have a winning team. We have the guys who do the grinding; we have a lot of skilled players that make the plays, the guys who score, the guys who get physical. The ingredients are there and the best part is that everyone has been getting along. It doesn't matter what you are doing on the ice as long as the guys are playing for each other in the locker room, you'll get results."
Mavericks win 4-1 over Thunder.
The Mavericks play their next game on Saturday, November 9 on the road in Wichita versus the Wichita Thunder at 7:05pm. The Mavericks return home on November 22nd to face the St. Charles Chill in their second game of the Show Me Cup series. With season tickets starting at just over $11 per game and FREE parking, the Mavericks are the pinnacle of family affordable entertainment.
