Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, IL - Jim McKenzie scored two power play goals and Thomas Heemskirk made 32 saves as the host Quad City Mallards defeated the Denver Cutthroats 5-2 Friday night.
The Mallards took a 2-1 lead into the third period and put the Cutthroats away by scoring three times in the final 20 minutes. Thomas Frazee's low shot from the right wing circle stretched the gap to 3-1 just a minute and 13 seconds into the third. Denver was on the power play when Garett Bembridge produced his second goal of the game with a one timer from the bottom of the left wing circle at the 5:46 mark to narrow the margin to 3-2. The Mallards, however, would reestablish a two goal cushion when McKenzie one-time home his second with just over four minutes remaining. A goal awarded to debuting Mallard rookie Nick Grasso after the Cutthroats' Lee Moffie intentionally dislodged the empty Denver net capped off the Quad City win with just 20 seconds left on the clock
The Mallards, who never trailed, first took the lead when Matt Boyd opened the scoring from the slot at 4:53 of the first period. Bembridge buried a rebound to even the score at one 13:35 of the first, but McKenzie's tip-in put the Mallards in front for good at 3:46 of the second period.
The Mallards return to action tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. against the Cutthroats. Tomorrow night is Military Appreciation Night presented by the Quad City Times as the Mallards recognize those who have served in the armed forces. All current and former members of the military and their families can purchase tickets to that game for just $5.
