INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI - The Missouri Mavericks defeated the Allen Americans 5-2 at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena on Saturday evening in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals, tying the Round 2 series of the ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs, 1-1.
The Mavericks dominated the opening period from the first puck drop, scoring three goals in the first twenty minutes of play on Allen goaltender Riley Gill. First to strike was defenseman CJ Ludwig, taking home the feed from teammates Jesse Graham and Tyler Barnes for an early 1-0 lead just 1:28 into the period. Barnes then followed that up with a goal of his own at 6:11 when he stuffed a loose puck past Gill in the crease while the Mavericks were on the power-play. Darian Dziurzynski and Carter Verhaeghe were credited with the helpers on the play.
Rookie Darren Nowick soon followed suit with another power-play tally off a rebound set up by Andrew Courtney and Bryce Aneloski to bring the Mavs command of the scoreboard up 3-0 at 16:35 of the opening frame.
Allen continued to bring their physical play to the second period, which resulted in several more man-advantage opportunities for the #1 seeded Mavericks, but the lone goal of the frame was brought on in an even-strength breakaway by forward Rocco Carzo at 7:06 of the period.
Leading 4-0 heading into the final twenty minutes, the Mavericks kept to their game and scored on their first chance of the frame, a power-play goal, 5:40 into the period. Barnes was the goal-scorer, notching his second of the night (fourth of the playoffs) with a blast to beat goaltender Joel Rumpel, who replaced Gill between the pipes just before the end of the second frame.
Allen made their way onto the scoreboard in a late rally with under five minutes to play in regulation when Casey Pierro-Zabotel denied Parker Milner the shutout victory at 15:04. Chad Costello then extended his post-season point-streak to nine games when he tapped in a stray puck just 1:33 to double the Americans' efforts.
Parker Milner held strong in goal for Missouri until the final horn, making a total of 21 saves through a full sixty minutes of play, earning his second post-season win for the Mavs.
