South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC- Mark Dekanich stopped all 21 shots he faced to lead the South Carolina Stingrays (5-2) to 1-0 victory over the Adirondack Thunder (5-2) in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals Saturday night at the North Charleston Coliseum. Austin Fyten's goal at 12:24 of the middle period proved to be the lone tally as the Stingrays tied the best-of-seven series, 1-1. The series now shifts to Adirondack for Game 3 on Tuesday.
One night after South Carolina surrendered five Adirondack goals on 16 shots, Dekanich was flawless, coming up with timely saves in the victory. The netminder denied two partial breakaways, including getting a shoulder on a Ryan Lomberg chance in the second period.
The Stingrays rewarded Dekanich's effort with a goal midway through the second period. Fyten scored his third goal of the postseason directly following the conclusion of a South Carolina power play. Caleb Herbert moved the puck to the front of the goal. Fyten jammed at a rebound from the crease. His first chance was denied by Adirondack goalie Ken Appleby, but Fyten swatted his second shot on the backhand past Appleby to make it 1-0.
The Thunder pressed in the third period, holding the Stingrays without a shot for the first half of the frame. Adirondack's best chance came from Lomberg who hit the far post with a shot charging down the right wing.
Both teams were perfect on the penalty kill. Adirondack went 0-for-5 on the power play while South Carolina was 0-for-3. The Stingrays outshot the Thunder 30-21.
The series now shifts to Adirondack where the Stingrays will play Game 3 on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Game 4 will be Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Glens Falls Civic Center, and if necessary, Game 5 would be Saturday in Adirondack. Fans are invited to the Watch Party at King Street Grille-Northwoods for all road playoff games.
