Mavericks Suffer Disheartening Loss
July 28, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
Inland Empire erased a ninth-inning deficit and Kyle Seager's 32- game hit streak came to an end in a disheartening 7-5 Mavericks loss against the 66ers Tuesday night at Mavericks Stadium.
For the second straight night, the Mavs failed to hold onto a ninth-inning. Up 5-4, Stephen Penney came in to try and preserve the win.
Penney (4-3) hit Alfredo Silverio on an 0-2 pitch to begin the inning. The Mavs then forced Silverio out at second on a poor bunt by Chris Gutierrez for the first out.
After a Travis Denker single, Scott Van Slyke belted the first pitch he saw out to left field to put Inland Empire in the lead for the first time.
The Mavs didn't put up much of a fight in the bottom of the inning, going down in order against Geison Aguasviva (3-4). The Inland Empire lefty worked three hitless innings of relief, retiring the last eight straight Mavericks batters.
For the season, the Mavs have now lost four games when leading after eight innings, three times against the 66ers.
The game got off to a good start for the Mavs, scoring in each of the first two innings. Johermyn Chavez hit an RBI single in the first, and Denny Almonte hit his 18th homer of the season in the second to make it 2-0.
The 66ers tied the game in the fourth. With the bases loaded and none out, Andres Perez sent a ground ball to third. Shaver Hansen threw the ball to second, and Seager fumbled the ball, allowing two runs to score.
The Mavs quickly broke the tie in the bottom of the inning with three runs, all scoring with two outs. Ralph Henriquez hit an RBI single, and Hansen followed with a booming two-run homer to make it 5-2.
The bats went silent from there on out, collecting just one hit for the rest of the game.
The 66ers shot back with two runs next time up. A run scored on a passed ball and Pedro Baez had a broken-bat, infield single to pull Inland Empire within one. The game remained 5-4 until the ninth.
If the loss weren't enough, Seager's memorable 32-game hit streak came to a close as well, as he went 0-for-3. He walked in the first, grounded out in the second, popped out in the fourth, and struck out in the seventh.
The Mavs will now have to play in a rubber match Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. against Inland Empire. Join the Mavericks for a Skidmarks Roadside Cafe Thirsty Thursday, with all beers on sale for just $2 from 6:05 p.m. through the end of the fifth inning.
